February 2024 Surgery Buddies?

When I went in for my 1 week visit to the dietician she told me that I was right on track... 14 pound loss since starting the pre-op diet. She told me to expect about a one-month stall (or very little weight loss) once I started to add food in. She said that clothing will start to fit looser, but the scale may come to a halt. Then it will pick up again. I'm trying to weigh only once a week and not bank on the scale as my only means of seeing results. It's hard!

I'm still stalled and starting to get very very down about it. I'm scared I'm just going to be stuck at this weight forever. I'm so so upset.

Please try not to worry. My dietician said this is very common. She said after about 2 weeks, I may stall for a month. She said to watch for clothing fitting looser during this time and not to be concerned about the scale. It will pick up again!

Thanks, rationally I know not to worry, but emotionally I'm struggling ... In french we say "Le coeur a ses raisons que la rasion ne connait pas" .... Which roughly translates as "The heart has its reasons that reason does not know."

So I know I'm being unreasonable but I can't stop the heart sinking feeling .... it's so hard

Until a couple days ago, my weight stalled more than two weeks. It's not moving again, slowly. I was told by the dietician and surgeon that weigh stalls will happen several times. The main goal is to keep doing what they say.

Had my 4-week post-op appointment with my dietician today. She wants me to start aiming for 80g Protein and 800 calories per day. Currently I'm averaging closer to 65g and 600 calories. We'll see how it goes this week!

I'm having eggs prepared all different ways, plain Greek yogurt or cottage cheese with fruit, tuna salad, smoked salmon, ricotta bake, quiche, white fish, ground turkey, baked tofu, and all types of cheese. I went out for sushi (sashimi, actually) and that was really nice. I also love edamame as a snack. Right now I'm having a no-sugar drinkable yogurt for a snack that's nice, although maybe too sweet to buy again. I'm not having a ton of veggies yet but I usually have a small serving of cucumber slices, julienne carrots, and diced tomatoes with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar at lunch, and I like to add spinach to an omelet for Breakfast sometimes. I'll have broccoli or green Beans with my Protein at dinner. Another nice treat is Peanut Butter powder, which I have in plain and chocolate.

That seems like a lovely balanced selection! I'll steal some ideas - how did the sashimi go down?

I've finally broken my stall I weighed in at 179.3 this morning so 20.7 pounds lost since surgery in 4.5 weeks! So 4 days late I hit the one month goal my surgery team set. Thanks all @NickelChip and @RonHall908 and @LisaCarylfor the reassurance during my big wobble.

The sashimi was great! Very easy to eat. I had just a few bites of my miso Soup and then gave that and the salad to my daughters (both items come with the order). I think I ate 4 or 5 pieces over the span of an hour, no rice, and half of one green tea mochi ice cream for dessert. I ordered a miso soup to take home because it was so delicious. I had half yesterday and will finish it today.

Congratulations on your stall breaking! Mine is still hanging on, but I'm just trying to ignore it. I've lost 21 lbs but a lot of that happened during the liquid diet pre-op. When I told my dietician I'd lost 15lbs in two weeks pre-op, she said that was way more than expected and might be why my post-op loss has been slower. It'll all work out in the end, I guess.

@NickelChip I'm going to try sashimi for lunch!

How much is everyone managing to walk/move per day ?

I'm trying to move as much as possible ( of course for activity but also to help keep Constipation at bay). I'm lucky that my city is walkable but it just takes so long to fit in 10k steps a day around an all day office job and life... The tower from in front and then from home at night after walking home !

That's a great view.
I walk one to two miles every other day. Part of the reason for the gastric bypass is I have a torn meniscus ligament in my knee. It's going to require a full knee replacement. The surgeon won't consider doing the surgery until I'm at 40 BMI. That's the reason why I can only do 1 to 2 miles, anymore than that is just unbearably painful. Tha days I don't walk, I get on the rowing machine I have at home. I try to exercise at least 6 days a week. It's not high intensity or anything as of yet. Great to see your stall has passed. My weight loss is very slow. But, it is moving.

@RonHall908 Sorry about your knee! I hope you manage to get the surgery as soon as you hit BMI 40. I'm notoriously bad at being active ... even when I wasn't overweight ( I put on 80 pounds 4 years ago over a year but before had always been circa 125lbs my whole adult life) I wan't active at all. Really, I'm the type to wait 7 minutes for the bus to do one stop which I could have walked in 5 ... I've been making a real effort since surgery and have walked a total of 271km ( 168 miles) in 32 days since surgery so an average or 8.4km a day (5.2 miles) - but even with a good playlist I'm just finding it so so so tedious. I'm also seeing the physiotherapist once a week (only 30 minutes - but still) to try and improve my balance and coordination ( I have mild cerebral palsy from a neonatal stroke which is why even a BMI of 32 was far far too high for me and my joints and tendons and why I absolutely have to get back to a bmi of at most circa 22-23 if I don't want to be in constant pain for the rest of my life ...).

I'm sort of hoping the moving/walking gets easier/ more enjoyable or maybe when the days start getting longer that it not being dark when I'm walking home from the office. I live just next to a 50m pool but luck has it that it closed for emergency work on the roof the day my team cleared me to swim ....

Wow, great job on walking. Sounds like you have the right attitude and drive to be very successful with the bariatric surgery. I would like to swim, but there's not very many places near me with indoor pools. Which would be ideal with my knee. Keep up the great work.

Morning all ( well it's the morning here)!

I weight in (officially) every Friday (In truth I have issues avoiding jumping on the scales every day)

I'm 5 weeks post-op today.

⁠Opération day weight 91.1kg ( 200.5 lbs - 14 stone 4 and a half)
•⁠ ⁠⁠Current weight 80.9kg ( 178 lbs - 12 stone 10 and a half)
•⁠ ⁠⁠Weight Lost 10.2kg or 11.19% of starting weight ( 22.5 lbs 1 stone 8 and a half )
•⁠ ⁠⁠Starting BMI 32.65
•⁠ ⁠⁠Current BMI 29.1

So my stall has well and truly broken and I think I'm on the right path!

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
