Full liquids - Veggie Soup

Recommended Posts

Looking for feedback on an idea. I was thinking of making a veggie Soup in my instant pot, then blending it so it’s more liquid-phase compliant.

I’m so tired of Protein Shakes and broth, I could scream, and I don’t love canned soup. My only big concern is the tomatoes - my program says no tomatoes/tomato products for the first 3 months because they have too much acid.

Anyone done something similar, or have any recipes?

Wouldn’t have survived without being able to eat Soup. Yes, to making it yourself. Use a Bone Broth as a base stock to get in your Protein & purée & strain well. You can also make a chicken or other meat based soup. Again strain everything out & if you have family they can eat the soup with all the meat & vegetables. You can also strain wonton soup, ramen noodles, etc. & drink the broth.

I was allowed Tomato Soup or Soup base as long as I could tolerate it. I had Tomato soup many times during my liquid phase.

With that being said, you should check with your team since your plane says no. Just ask them if you can try a small amount and see how you do. Wouldn't hurt to ask and hopefully it will work out in your favor.

I've been having Tomato Soup since the first day home (water mixed in for week 1, and milk added in week 2). Then I and added V8 juice in week 3 and have had no issues. I'd say go for it, but if it bothers your stomach, step back from it and try again in a few weeks.

In full liquid phase, I boiled up a chicken carcass for stock, added green cabbage, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, cooked to very soft then used immersion blender. It blended well. Watered it down if it was a bit thick. It was delicious!
Once I was on purée stage I added the chicken to it and blended that in the blender.

A resounding yes from me to making Soup and then pureeing it - that what got me through the full liquid and pureed phases. I had a little stock of tiny tubs frozen too :)

Great idea and if you are like me and only know how to make a huge pot and the only one that likes it consider “Souper Cubes” to freeze the rest. They are basically giant ice cube molds but then you can put them in ziplocks and they fit so nicely in the freezer.

I am new to the site, but I had my surgery July 26, so I am at the same phase as you, my surgeon said I could eat Tomato Soup as long as I could tolerate it, which I have done completely fine with it. So I would say go for it.

I would talk with your team. You have them for a reason. Can you just omit the tomatoes from your Soup? Maybe replace it with something else?

Some surgeons will tell you to stay away from tomatoes at first if you've had a history of gerd or is susceptible to getting gerd. I had severe gerd and had a revision because of it but I was allowed Tomato Soup "with caution".

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
