So far, I did 6 nutritionist visits, a psych visit, multiple rounds of blood work, an EKG, an echocardiogram, a swallow test, an EGD, and needed clearance from 3 other specialists. I'm probably forgetting something at this point.

Thursday, I have a pre-anesthesia screening test, have to weigh in, and will have a 1-2 hour long physical/consultation with my surgeon. Friday, I'll have a 3-4 hour long class with one of the nutritionists. I assume this will be to cover the pre-op and post op-diet in detail.

It's a lot, but I'm kind of glad there are so many steps. It's given me time to prepare mentally.

I did have to have the EGD, EKG, and psych clearance before they would approve me and then after approval I had dietitian classes and exercise classes to tell me about what they want me to eat and how much exercise to do but I only met with the surgeon for less than 15 min and all he basically did was ask which surgery I wanted and that was it. All of that took from jan to june to get done because everyone was so over booked. After early june though, I won't see anyone again until the day of the surgery. I'm sure it will all work out but I would have preferred to have a longer visit with my Dr just to feel less like a number and more like a person but honestly I didn't have any questions and since I passed all my tests then I'm healthy enough and that's all that really matters.

If y'all have never done a dexa scan, I highly recommend them! I got my first dexa scan in May, with the scan showing my total mass at 216.9lbs, my fat mass 99.2lbs, lean mass 111.5, my visceral fat 3.10lbs, and my body fat 45.8%. Yesterday I got a new scan, and I weigh more at 217.2lbs but my fat mass went down to 92.4, lean went up to 118.9lbs, my visceral went down to 2.31lbs, and my body fat is now at 42.5%.

The tech that performed the scan was like "the scale is a liar, you're doing great!!" Which was really nice to hear, I'll definitely be getting a scan done every few months to see more than what the scale can tell me.

I don't know exactly what I had but at my exercise appointment she did a body fat analysis with electric current. So it wasn't just a scale but she said it was an older model but she liked it better. I didn't write down my results though but she wrote it down to compare with new results 8 weeks after surgery. Sounds like you are doing great! Its nice to have other ways to see the improvement besides the scale, especially when its hard to tell.

Day one of my pre op liquid diet today… I did find out I can maintain a clear liquid diet along with the shakes.< /p>

Yay! That should help a little with flavor variety at least. Did you try any of your flavors in your shake yet? Was wondering if anything tasted extra good or anything to avoid. I know everyone's tastes are different, but can't hurt to hear opinions.

I’m on liquid, but I can have creamy Soups. I made Tomato Soup with tomatoes from my garden and zucchini basil Soup from my garden. I used a emulsifier to cream and liquify the soup…..so delicious.

Those sound amazing! I know I can do the cream Soups after surgery as long as I strain them but before surgery I have to watch the carbs and stay under 800 calories. Fresh from the garden is the best though!

That's called BIA, or Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis. They make home scales that do the same thing (I have one), but they're not all that accurate. DEXA is definitely the more accurate way to determine body fat, but it requires a radiation tech and a much more expensive machine (it's a type of x-ray called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry).

Today was my pre op appointments. I first met with the resident, then the surgeon and then the nutritionist. Then I went for my Covid test and then on to anesthesia and finally the lab. It was a busy day, but I managed to stop on the way home for a hair cut. 😅

I am starving!!! Today I drank three Gatorade Zero with Protein, 3 sf Jello cups, the broth from a can of chicken noodle Soup mixed with a packet of ProCel for an extra 10 G protein…and probably half a box of sf popsicles. Okay, not really…but a LOT of popsicles.

One more day and then surgery. Hopefully I won’t be hungry anymore after that. A big, fat taco with mild sauce would taste so good!

Thursday Sept 1st for me. There are a lot of different dr requirement, isn't there? Mine is 2 weeks of Protein Shakes, 3 oz lean Protein and 2 cups non starchy veggies per day. Day before surgery only Protein Drinks and nothing not even Water after midnight. Good luck, it's getting close!

So it turned out that there is two days of Clear Liquids and then nothing the morning of surgery. The letter posted to MyChart was pretty far off from what I was told at my appointments today. I am deeply grateful I did not have to do weeks. I applaud those of you who are doing that because I know it is NOT easy!!!

So today is your big day!!! Yayyy!!!! The first in our group. You will do great. We are all cheering for you!

Day 1 of the liquid diet is over and I didn’t do so bad… 2 Meal Replacement shakes, a cup of sf Jello, a few oz of beef broth, lots of Water and a sf popsicle… I was definitely too tired when I got home to even fool with the 3rd shake… but I assume less is better than more. On day 2 now hopefully it is easy as well!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
