October 2022 surgery support

Recommended Posts

I have no preop diet. Surgery is on October 17th.

Fly to Turkey on the 16th- Do all testing. No food 24 hours before and was told to avoid fatty foods and carbonated drinks for the week before. Feels a bit odd but my liver tests came back working above average so I suppose that may be it?

Pre-op was THE hardest stage for me. You can do it, and if you get tempted or frustrated, spam us lol.

I’m booked for 3rd November 😬

You should be able to find a support group for November :) likely even a surgery date twin.

I had some issues long time ago, where i needed to take Iron supplement for a month, but never this bad and not in last 10 years.

I'm scheduled for October 11. I switched surgeons now and hoping this is going to be it. Trying to work on not talking myself out of it or overthinking too terribly much.
I'm October 11th too!

Scared but excited.

Same. I was supposed to have it a while ago, but declined. Feeling better about things this time, but doubts and worry creep in.

Congrats to all my October buddies. My surgery date is October 3rd. I started my pre-op liquid diet yesterday and it seems surprisingly easy. I do wonder how I will feel about it next week though. I am isolated in my daily life. I am over 50, single with no kids at home or nearby, I work from home and live in a suburban area that is mostly made up of families and traveling plant workers and I don't know anyone - no support system in place. Who else is going through this completely alone? I am arranging paid transportation to the med center and a paid medical transport to bring me home following the procedure. For those of you who have had to go through this by yourself, did you feel able to manage alone post-op? What was the most difficult thing?

Hey there! I came to wish everyone in Oct good luck but saw your post and thought I could help answer your question! I’m nearly 3 weeks post-op and feeling *almost* back to normal but I can shed some light on the first couple of weeks.

You will be very, very tired when you get home. I don’t recall nausea (I know for sure I didn’t vomit) but the gas is for real. Walking helps. Take it slow and do laps in your house. I didn’t experience too much pain (I had no narcotics) just 1000mg Tylenol, Gabapentin & Celebrex…weird combo but it worked. I needed it for the whole week mainly for the laparoscopic incisions and the largest one has some really deep internal sutures that are painful. Stay hydrated - tiny, tiny sips of Water. You can figure out Protein later but you will 100 legit not be hungry - it’s weird.

Forget it if you are a side sleeper…invest in a back support pillow because you will need it. I’ve also seen that a lot of people lounge/sleep in a recliner…if I had it to do over again I would likely have invested in one. Roll out of bed holding a pillow to your tummy and letting gravity assist. Do not lift heavy things or reach for things overhead (I would prepare your home now anticipating no lifting/reaching). But, you will definitely be able to manage! All of these things get better and better each day - 3 weeks out seems to be the magic time when everything gets a lot easier.

Sorry for the long post but I’m hoping this will be helpful!! Good luck!

The doctor didn't give me any pre op diet yet. [emoji53] I am worried that I'm not doing things right. I will send him a message to make sure things are right. Maybe it's because I lost 20 lbs on my own since June??? Maybe I'm overthinking things too....

How are you doing??

Scared but excited.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
