Gastric Bypass WITH stomach removal

How did you get approved for surgery with a bmi of 30??? Even if you were self pay (not sure if you were or not) I would think 30 would be too low for bariatric surgery.

Many places will do it with a BMI of 30 for self pay. It seems like I have Even heard of someone’s insurance covering it at 30 with certain comorbidities but I would not swear to that. They have done tons of studies that show people with 30 BMI are actually more successful on average with weight loss and keeping it off.

Wondering if they started with the sleeve since it's the most common WLS these days, realized their mistake and went bypass. Having said that, I had the VSG to bypass revision recently and asked a surgeon at the hospital how would it be different than the straight bypass and he said basically the same thing as your surgeon did. He said that with the sleeve, I already have far less ghrelin production than a normal stomach, so after the revision it'll be even more so. I couldn't find any studies online though.

It wasn’t an error. He told me “that’s what we do here” and said they removed it the same as a sleeve would in order to remove the ghrelin hormones.

She got it done in Mexico. Over there they really dont have the strict rules like they do here in the USA.

It’s a bmi of 30+ in the U.S. including down the road from me. It was just cheaper over there. The 35+ with comorbidities or 40 w/o is standard insurance company guidelines for payment of surgery but it’s 30 for qualification to have it at most places in the U.S.

Okay. Gotcha. Maybe I'm being too cynical of them then. Before my surgery, my surgeon showed me a video of the exact procedure he was going to do, explained it to me in a diagram and drew it out. He told me that surgeons have different ways doing the procedure (limb length, pouch size... Etc.), and he told me the details of what he's going to do so there would be no surprises. That was the time I could ask all my questions.

Anyway, congrats on your surgery!

You had proper communication. I didn’t lol. I told them prior to surgery that no one has talked to me about the procedure. I just had the informed consent description in writing. I asked that someone come talk to me prior to surgery and was told it would happen but no one did

At any rate, how are you doing? Any issues yet or are you just trucking right along?

I guess its different for different parts of the USA. My bariatric center is body mass index of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35-39 with co-morbidities such as type II diabetes.

It varies from surgeon to surgeon but many in US do it with 30 BMI.

Did they give you PPI’s? A lot of doctors just give them to you automatically but some you have to ask.

Hummmm. I wonder if they have anything stronger?? I haven’t had any issues (fingers crossed) but many on here have. I bet someone will chime in if they do and have been prescribed something stronger.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
