After surgery you get several medications to take in pill form. You can take them. Some get pain killers, Acid reducers and other stuff.

Some of this changes with the type of surgery you have.

I found oxycontin, which is time released oxycodone didn't work for me at all. I do straight oxycodone and manually time release it (take a pill or two every few hours). There is also no crushing or chewing problem with oxycodone, one can even get used to the flavor... if flavor is what you want to call it.

I've also found that many meds where I can feel an effect don't last as long as they did pre-op.

There is nothing for pain like losing a few hundred pounds.

Good luck,

Tek

we were originally told we'd have to crush pills for awhile, but they only crushed them for me when I was in the hospital. The PA at my clinic said as long as the pills were no bigger than a pencil eraser, I could swallow them whole. Bigger ones might take two or three weeks, he said. Almost all of mine were small, so I never crushed those. And one of the big ones was Calcium (those giant horse pills), so I just got a chewable.

Talk to your surgeon/PCP about getting a 30-day supply of liquid meds. Warning: they usually taste horrid.

Oh I agree, I didnt get them in liquid form but crushed or broke my pain killers and they taste vile too. I was so happy to finally swallow them whole again

I took all of my pills the night I had my surgery - about ten pills total. It was hard to swallow them with the tiny sips of Water I could tolerate, but I just took one at a time.

One thing to be aware of: opioids cause Constipation as does this surgery. Get on top of that as soon as you have surgery. Miralax, exercise, etc. If you haven't gone in a few days, talk to your doctor about a glycerin suppository.

Good luck!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
