Has anyone ever been to one of these. Apparently they are all over. I want to go so badly. What’s good there? It all looks so good on their online menu. Also, if I get a smoothie to go and put in fridge will it be good later that same day? I am thinking if I eat food I obviously can’t do a smoothie too but I could have it later for a snack or for dinner if it’s a Protein One. Maybe I will just get a smoothie and call it a day. I glanced at the calories and many things are a splurge as listed but I’m thinking I can get the sauce on the side or leave off the bacon, etc to make it doable. Just curious what others get there.

How do the nutrients fit in with your dietary plan? Not just calories but sugar, fat, carb content too. What are the serving portions like? Many smoothies are high in sugar & carbs from the fruit content alone with many containing more fruit than you’d eat in a single serve but without the fibre & nutrients left in the pulp they toss out.

There’s nothing wrong with splitting a meal over a lunch & dinner. I’ve done it. Did it two weeks ago with a middle eastern halloumi salad bowl I had at lunch. Took the left overs home & had them for dinner. Just added chicken as I’d eaten most of the Protein component at lunch.

Do your homework & then make an informed decision. Whether you indulge or not ultimately is your decision.

Here is the Tropical Smoothie Cafe nutritional info charts - https://d38zwb0vf9f6v5.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/19172332/Menu-Optimization-2021-Promo-1-2022-Sports.pdf

For me, I think even the Kids smoothie option has too many carbs, but YMMV.

Some of the sandwiches look doable, I'd probably split it in half and have both lunch and dinner.

I was looking at the kids smoothies too. The 12 oz Jetty junior with Splenda doesn’t look bad. It’s 80 calories 20g carbs 12g sugar. I am trying to find something to have as a treat on occasion that isn’t too bad. I think that will do. If I’m reading this correctly it’s less than an apple. I need to print it out though and be sure because I’m reading it on my phone

They have a salad that is supposedly only 350 calories. I find it hard to believe though because it has grilled chicken breast, bacon and a salsa ranch dressing. I mean I guess it could be a lite dressing and they could be skimpy with the chicken and bacon but I bet they don’t really make it that way when you get there. I would probably leave off the bacon either way because I can live without it but does their dressing come pre portioned? If not I know I have to get that on the side too.

do they really toss the pulp in smoothies? I thought that was just when juicing?? I think I have decided that if I go with a smoothie it will be the childrens 12 ounce one

My nutritionist said Hard Pass. Too much sugar in the fruit and veg, even if you got it with whey mixed in. Besides, the drinks are huge, even pre-surgery. You're better off making your own controlled smoothies at home.

Here's a video link to a bariatric surgeon making a smoothie

Calories are so high! I think you could go but is it really worth it - aren't there any better smoothie places or other restaurants that you might be able to relax and choose more widely from the menu?

I live in a small town and it’s the only smoothie place I know of anywhere near me. I have been going over and over their nutritional data and menu and I think I found one that will be okay. First off they make their smoothies with turbanado sugar unless you request to substitute splenda which helps a lot. Second, they use juice from concentrate for some of their fruits but not all so choosing the right fruits is key. Third, they have the kids smoothies which is 12oz so of course that cuts everything in half. The jetty junior With Splenda Is 80 calories, 20g carbs and 12g sugar. I am pretty sure it’s just fresh strawberry, fresh banana and Splenda. Although they must add something to make it blend. Idk maybe just ice or Water? ? Something. I will watch them closely as they make it for sure.

So...go for it. But I'd just do custom stuff and tell them what you want. I can't see there's a reason for either sugar or splenda tbh. Crushed ice, fruit, whey ...why not.

Do you make your own smoothies? I have with Greek yogurt but not Protein Powder? Do you think a full scoop of Protein would dissolve okay in 12oz smoothie or would it need to be half scoop?? I have a feeling I will be one of the firsts to order protein powder in the kids size. Lol

I do make my own smoothies and sometimes add protein powder but it's really mainly to hide disgusting-but-healthy things I want to get in my body. Sprouted chickpeas and that sort of thing. Spirulina. Also a handful of supplements like NMN and resveratrol. Smash it all up with a handful of something tasty to hide the nasty like frozen pineapple chunks.

Or....I do it with coffee and just collagen.

Edit:

I use Greek yoghurt or kefir. Check the protein because some are better than others and you may not need protein powder at all

I just wanted to update. I ended up going and I got a Thai chicken salad 370 calories and the Jetty junior smoothie made with Splenda 80 calories. I drank the smoothie on the way home and just had the salad for dinner. They were both really good. So SOME of the stuff on the menu is high calorie but not all. I guess it’s like anywhere you go really.

I actually went to planet smoothie and. I get the Big Bang smoothing no sugar added and it’s great and i tolerated it just fine and has 12g of Protein

Do they post the nutritional info? I only ask because some of the smoothies at tropical smoothie seem harmless but if you pay attention they are over 700 calories and that’s before you start adding stuff. Some of their food is the same way. That’s why I had to study the menu online before I went.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
