Food coma

Recommended Posts

Hi I’m 3 yrs out from my surgery..just wondering if anyone is having an issue with what I call food coma right after a meal.. It seems like no matter what I eat it could be the most healthy thing and right after I eat I crash real hard and get very sleepy..even sometimes after my Premier Protein drinks..I even drink the espresso ones with caffeine and make smoothies with fruits and veggies and still crash after any advice appreciated..

I get this. I feel like no matter what I eat I pass out. Doesn't feel like I go to sleep it feels like I pass out.

I can be out 20 minutes to 3 hours.

I have type two diabetes and because my HBA1c is kept low with meds they won't listen. They say it's normal after a hearty meal. ICANT EAT A HEART MEAL.

Does it make you feel weak and confused after wards

I used to get that. Really bad. Never thought of it the way you described it but yes, it's a sort of food coma. Come to think of it, I'm still getting it, but not as hard as before, like a crash, more of a wave. I nap every day after lunch. Like you said, even if I eat something healthy.

it may have to do with blood sugar. Starting about year 3, I started having occasional dizziness that I couldn't explain. Had a complete workup at the doctor's office. Nothing. Everything normal. The next time I noticed it, It was about two hours after I had a piece of cake. I mentioned it to my doctor - she thinks it was probably reactive hypoglycemia, which sometimes happens in RNY patients (not super common, but it does happen to some). She thought that my glucose level just happened to be normal at the time I had the workup, so it didn't jump out at them. She recommended I eat something every three hours - preferably a Protein - but if I eat a carb, to be sure to at least pair it with a protein. That seemed to have done the trick. At least for me. That may not be going on with you, though - you might want to check with your doctor.

Thanks for your reply. I was told this before a long time ago. It was all to do with insulin resistance. 30 carbs to 15 protein. I'll give it another go.

I haven't had my surgery yet but I pray that you'll be okay. Sounds horrible

I do have to say that the surgery has been one of the best things I have ever done ✔️

This happens to me, starting at about 5 months post op I mentioned it to the nutritionist and the doctor. I have found if I "snack or graze" all day and don't actually eat a meal, I'm ok for the most part. However, once I eat dinner I'm done for. The problem is that it feels more like a pass-out kinda moment compared to a "lull" in energy. It usually happens with a higher Protein meal about 15-20 grams. I've been hoping to find some kind of remedy to it, because my husband nor my work are understanding when this happens to me. My husband isn't too terrible but my work would absolutely fire me if I fell asleep at my desk.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
