I find it fascinating that this thread turned into a debate about race. I don't interpret what Oprah is doing to be a black/white issue at all.

Don't you know the REAL reason Oprah does the things she does? It's all about ratings (which really means more money)!

How do you think she keeps on making money hand over fist? How do you think Oprah built her multi-media empire in the first place? She's a very talented communicator. Her chameleon-like skills have been honed through years and years of practice. If she couldn't make herself appear approachable to a wide variety of people, her ratings would be in the toilet, she wouldn't be selling magazines, or making movies, etc.

She is a very shrewd businesswoman and if she wants to keep funding all of her charity work, she's got to keep raking in the dough!

Yes, that's pretty much what I was trying to say.

If that's what she meant, then that's what she should have said. Saying someone talks a race (or as someone else pointed out a color) makes no sense. People do talk different according to who they are around. And if you never do that then okayyyy. When I watched Paula Deen on Oprah she acted differently than she does on her show. She was quoting 50 cent lyrics.

So, just because I don't agree with every word you said, I am not decent or intelligent. If you read my post again, you'll see that nothing in my post stated anything about talking a color. I could be wrong, but I honestly don't think that Tits original post was meant to be a racist remark. I was simply commenting on her accent, period. BTW, listening to Paula Deen quote 50 cent lyrics would annoy me too.

It's not about him being black at all, if that was the case you would see more blacks in the audiences and her support of OUR race fully.

Orpah should support African Americans, in mean that's who she is. I agree it is about the rating also and sponsors, they are important shareholders.

This is funny!! if Orpah supported blacks only...YOU (meaning all other races) wouldn't watch her.

ALL

Bottom line--don't HATE on Oprah because you couldn't afford her!!! She's a professional strong black women making more money than 5 generations of your family would make.

Make that money Oprah!!!

I don't deny that Oprah is a strong, professional woman at all, or that she probably makes more money than all of us put together. And I certainly don't think anyone here has said they hate Oprah. Personally, I don't care who she endorses, it won't sway my opinions at all. I understand where both sides of this agrument is coming from. On one hand, I don't care who Oprah endorses because I am perfectly capable of making an educated decision without her stamp of approval. On the other hand, there are many people who will not research for themselves and vote for Obama just because she endorses him, but that really isn't her fault that her followers do not think for themselves. I certainly have not been offended by anything Oprah has said. I agree with Transformers post, her chameleon-like skills are for ratings, but it still irritates me.

KLPDL, good for you!

The race card is sensitive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, however, in this setting everyone must be careful when addressing the RACE CARD. Perhaps everyone isn't educated on the term STRONG/PROFESSIONAL BLACK WOMEN unless you are one.

Most talk show host don't exist any more or considered to be HAS-BEENS. There for standing the test of time in the media equals STRONG.

Who in the media doesn't entertain for ratings, that's what ratings are all about. Speaking of ratings...Martha Stewart is the queen of it all! Let's not forget someone who works minorities for a little of nothing, and supports some African Americans so she can say she embraces diversity. Finally the world has a rich black women and can't handle it. I'm sure if she was interested in your story you would be on the show tomorrow? Maybe not???

I will leave this topic alone, just remember when a topic such as this is posted, it could be racially offensive.

I wish you all the best ----Strong Women because you decided to make a change for you HEALTH!!!

I went there...this is a general statement...I started with your name because I wanted to add to what you said but ending up going in three different directions because this whole subject just tripped me out.

The fact you've dated a black man and have a mixed child doesn't mean you are not races. My stepfather is white,,,I have two mixed sibling and I've dated white males, point is that means nothing. I'm sure you have a nice family, the comment addresses her status today.

Yes I'm a stranger but I'm WLS buddy that is offended by anyone making racial comments.

I think you need to re-read my post. Somehow you have turned my post into an Oprah hating discussion. Nothing I have said has been racist. I watch Oprah when I'm interested in the topic and I think she does a lot of good. My post stated that I don't care who she endorses.

Just so you know, I like the Oprah Show a whole lot more than the Martha Stewart Show. The color of their skin has nothing to do with it. Anyone can be strong and professional, no matter what color - IMO, you are the only one that is making it an issue.

This idea of her being a chameleon-- is not only only a good thing -- but it's necessary for anyones sucess. Everyone knows what it takes to succeed, and if you don't shift your behavior/communication style with the audience, you're a fool. Prime example: I'm not going to enter a room full of spanish people and talk french. Furthermore, when you have such skills, people tend to describe that as being "fake", to me it's not. It's a skill. Her field is communication and low and behold--- she's a good communicator on many levels. I don't see it as an issue.

I agree with most of your post. Her being like a "chameleon" is very good for her success. Like I said earlier, I saw her Macon, Ga. show and the southern accent sounded really forced and unnatural to me. I have no problems with Oprah. There are many public figures that do the same thing. Oprah just happened to be the one that this thread was about.

Many people aren't aware that Oprah stated she would support Barack prior to him even throwing his hat in the ring. Personally, I vote on issues and will be doing so in 2008. In addition, when I went to Atlanta, by the 2nd day I was talking with a southern accent. The same thing happened when I went to Bangalore for two weeks. I was training 10 people and adopted their mannerisms and sayings. That's what communicating properly is all about.

It's ok as long as she is on tv and you can't see how she interacts with EVERYONE! I don't know what it means to talk black or white, but I do know what it means to speak with diction, and clear pronunciation. I think that everyone can pick up a Southern accent when they visit the south, or have visitors from the south. I pick up a Southern accent every time I visit GA, SC etc...and when I have relatives visit it's even worse. Phony she may be at times, but she has a daily, if not hourly reminder that she is a Black women. She isn't pretending to be anything that she's not...since she is the first black woman that is damn near a millionaire-there isn't a script for her to follow that will PLEASE everyone! She is very pretentious, yes but she is a great humanitarian! It may not be racism rearing it's ugly head in most places in America...but it's damn close! I don't see anyone asking why Madonna now talks with a British accent..

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
