Game: What Color is Oprah Today?

Recommended Posts

Tits, you are right about the voting. It is sad and it is pathetic that people don't care about issues and such, and will base their vote on a celebrities point of view. Hillary is going to have women voting for her just because she is a woman. Obama is going to have blacks vote for him just because he is black. Oprah is going to pull in some votes because she is Oprah. We just have to hope that the majority of our voting society bases their vote on something more important than gender, race, or the celebrity factor.

For the record, I also take issue to people like Eminem who try to act like something they aren't. People keep asking what white vs. black sounds like even though we all know exactly what the person who wrote that means. Some black people have a distinct way of speeking that you can hear over the phone or on the radio but it's certainly not the sound of a color! My next door neighbors are black as coal, but their children are on the honor roll and they make us look like white trash next to their immaculate home and educated speech. They're better groomed than I'll ever be, and I sound like a moron mumbling with words like uhhuh, gotta, spoze to, shoulda, etc.

How is it Oprah's fault that people are dumb? Can't feel sorry for followers.

I don't feel sorry for them, those people have the potential to destroy our country even more. It's a ploy just to get votes, the candidates KNOW that people will vote for them because some celebrity says they're voting for them, whether it's Oprah or King Kong, it's still wrong. It's wrong for the celebrity and it's wrong for the candidate, to take advantage of the ignorant people. I would rather win knowing people voted for me because they know what I'm about and want that.

As far as talking black, i don't know what to tell you on that. I think you're beating a dead horse, because I doubt very seriously you're going to get an answer to than one.

Why take issue w/Eninem? How is he acted like something he isn't? He grew up in a trailer park in Detroit. I have been to the Detroit and 8 mile road. I'm confused are you saying a white male shouldn't rap. Should Cowboy Troy not sing country?

If you heard me talk you wouldn't know what race I was or where I am from. Over the phone or radio can you also tell the difference Asians, Latinos, and European Americans as well?

Why are you seem surprised your black neighbors kids are on the honor roll and are educated? What does the their complexion have to do with anything? Black as coal?

I guess where we are from helps use to form some of our opinions. I keep wondering where you are from. Either way that's not an excuse either. I am from the south and grew up in the country, but I know there is a world outside of NC.

I don't even know why I clicked on this thread. I had a feeling it was going to be something ignorant. What is talking white? talking black? There is definitely some real ignorance in this thread. And no I am not defending Oprah b/c I am black. I am speaking up against ignorance. Just b/c Oprah supports Obama doesn't mean she's doing it b/c he's black. I can bet none of us in this thread know Oprah. So, does Elizabeth Hasslebitch support Bush b/c he's white.

And I guess my lack of ebonics means I am typing white. That's some real bullshit. And let me follow suit, I'm not racist by the way.

I clicked to read some of the answers.... but I totally agree, I thought, I don't know why....:).... it was going to be an ignorant thread.... thank you.

What makes it wrong? Should Montell Williams, Michael J. Foxx, Magic Johnson, Maurice Bernard, Tamia, Carnie Wilson, Muhammad Ali also not talk about their medical conditions? or should people like Susan Surrandon, Oprah, Julia Roberts, Bono etc not use their celebrity for things they believe in like fighting injustices in the world? I think they should spread the word about things they believe in whether we agree w/them or not.

Why not use their celebrity (fame)?

You're right. I guess I am putting more of the blame on the celebrities than I actually should. People should speak out for what they believe in. I just think it's wrong to vote for someone just because someone else is, no matter who it is. And in the end, that lays on the general publics shoulder to use our voting privileges the right way. People shouldn't let a celebrity or anyone else sway their vote just because of who they are.

Celebrities have the same right as anyone else to publicly support a political candidate. In the case of Oprah, I am sure she is putting her money where her mouth is. I say she has about a 50/50 chance of turning people on or off. Celebrities get attention and that is what a political campaign is all about. Newspapers, businesses, religious groups, special interest groups and other politicians endorse candidates, so I think a voter, whether or not they are famous, has every right to do the same.

Intelligence is not a requirement for voting, only being of age and a citizen. People have all kinds of different reasons for voting for one candidate or another. Not all of them are based on the candidate themselves. Besides they lie so much, what difference does it make why one would vote for any particulare candidate.

ITA. People vote for the wrong reasons every day. Hell, many people that vote just vote party-line, and don't even look to see if they agree with the candidate. That's not any better than voting just because you like a celebrity.

Ok - don't pick on Eminem. He has always talked like that.

What about all those people who thought they were voting for Bush Sr.? :whoo:

And BTW I have to look up every acronym you use, Lauren, so I definitely learn from you.

If you've ever been to Detroit, you would understand why Eminem talks the way that he does. It's no different than growing up in NYC. NYC is separated by money more than by race. Therefore, people of all races tend to hang together in the hood. When I worked in customer service, I would actually get callers that would say, "thank goodness, I found someone who isn't Black to talk to." LOL. Sometimes they said things that were even worse.

You are wrong about that. I'm white and I'm offended by many of the posts in this thread. I have a feeling that you don't even know how ignorant your post is.

I have a feeling you don't even know how much of an hypocrit you are for saying so. Touche. Like I said it was my opinion, you don't have to like it.

Yikes, I hope I didn't offend. All I was talking about was accents, not anything to do with white, black, blue or any other "color". :phanvan

I had to laugh at the "Elizabeth Hasslebitch." There's one I can't stand! Let's talk about her for a while! :heh:

What I find offensive is that Obama thinks that just because Oprah "endorses" him that he'll get more votes, and what is even more offensive that he will just because of her. Why do they need to get celebrity endorsements? I'm sure it has nothing to do with them thinking the American people are too stupid to make up their own minds huh?
It's not offensive (IMO), it's good politicking.

There is a very valid phenomenon that happens when Oprah is involved. It has been nicknamed "The Oprah Boost." It happens with music, clothing, books in particular, and even politics. When Oprah endorses it, even implicitly, its popularity goes up - whatever it of the week may be. Even Bush.

It is sad that people flock behind a celebrity, but it happens. I don't find it offensive because it's our media imposed human nature.

It's really no different from the use of celebrities in commercials. It's all about manipulation, and the fact that by and large, we allow ourselves to be manipulated. Celebrity involvement - provided the right celebrity - usually equates to success, whether success is money, popularity, advertisement - whatever. Look at what the Pepsi commercials of the 80s did for a virtually dead company. They brought celebrities into their commercials, that was the only thing they did differently, and relatively overnight they went from borderlining financial ruin to the #1 cola product.

Also consider the demographic Obama is after, and the demographic that makes up a large percentage of Oprah's target audience.

It's a smart move on his behalf.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
