I can understand the stomach acid causing teeth problems - did you have GERD issues before the surgery?

No, I never had GERD.

Well, I’m so sorry that has happened to you, I’m sure that was/is frustrating and expensive on top of the life changes you’ve had with the WLS. Are you still taking all your supplements you took right after surgery? I know some have opted to just take a regular or even children’s chewable vitamins, but I’d hate to take the chance. There have been a few who say they have had severe teeth problems since their surgery, so you are not alone, but thankfully it doesn’t seem to be a big problem. I’m going to ask about it when I go to my family dr and the Bariatric dr again in January.

Yes, I take my bariatric vitamin/mineral supplements every day. My former roommate had WLS ten years ago and has had a lot of dental problems, too, including the loss of two teeth, but that could be due to other factors.

Thanks for your input. I wouldn’t want to undo this operation, but I’ll certainly be interested to see how this all plays out over time. Congratulations on all your weightloss!! You are an awesome example of how to go about it!!! How long did it take for you to meet your goal? I’m going very slowly right now. Had started at 4 lbs. a week for 3 weeks or so, and went down to 2 then 1 for the last couple weeks. I struggle so much with getting Water and Protein. Now that I’m on regular food I don’t drink those stinkin high Protein Shakes anymore, and I know that’s probably a lot of it, but I’m not hungry most of the time. I know my taste has changed. But if I can keep losing at least 1 pound a week I’ll get there........just slower...... YOU ROCK!

I think you'll be fine if you are scheduling regular dental checkups and cleanings. We can't predict our dental outcomes but we can prevent many problems by being vigilant, taking our vitamins/minerals, and investing financially in our dental health.

As for my weight loss, even my surgeon does not know how I got down to 121 lbs. He had predicted I would end up at about 150 lbs. I did no more or less than any other WLS patient in terms of diet and exercise, but since surgery, I've struggled a lot with nausea problems and noticed that after extended bouts that lasted a few days (when I hardly ate anything) I would drop several pounds. I'm actually in a weird situation right now where I am working with my nutritionist to stabilize my weight by increasing healthy fats, drinking Ensure during nausea bouts, and eating very small meals before bedtime.

Don't be discouraged about losing 1 lb. a week. We all reach a point in our weight loss when it slows down quite a bit. Keep up the good habits and you'll reach your goal!

Is the Ensure in addition to all your Vitamin supplements? I sometimes have nausea, but only threw up once. But my nausea isn’t 24/7 or anything like that. Has the advice of the nutrition helped you a lot? Which Ensure do you drink?

Absolutely. Even on my worst nausea days, I make sure I take my vitamin/mineral supplements. My nutritionist is fantastic. She makes herself available by email/phone five days a week and does not charge for the updated short consultations.

I drink Ensure Plus on nausea days. I prefer the strawberry flavor. It's very inexpensive and doesn't taste too bad.

Ha! I read all these messages about teeth being bad after WLS and didn’t have the problem......UNTIL! I went to the dentist for the first time since my surgery, and also hadn’t been there in over a year and had 5 areas on my teeth with cavities! I ALWAYS (since adulthood) had great checkups. I could hardly believe it! He asked me if I had GERD, and I said yes, I’ve had it for YEARS and I’m on pantoprazole even now, but he said acid is causing my problems. I have no problems with GERD being on the medicine, so what else could it be??? He also gave me a script for the strong fluoride toothpaste, but doesn’t know if he can save my molars! Great news! Just thought I’d share! I am not on a Calcium supplement.

it's usually due to GERD or perhaps dry mouth (if you have that). I've been on Prevident (that ultra-high fluoride toothpaste) since I had surgery six years ago. My dentist said that can go a long way toward preventing damage from acid. As far as dry mouth, things like Biotene products (or the generic form - sprays, mouthwash, lozenges) can help - so can things like gum or breath mints with xylitol in them. And be sure to keep well hydrated, too.

P.S. there's some thought that people who've had WLS have more acidic saliva than normal people - but that toothpaste should help with that. I also get a fluoride varnish brushed on my teeth every six months (by the dental hygienist)

I just got the special toothpaste, and believe I had been on Biotine for several years until the surgery, then wondered if I should stay on it, so I stopped. But yes, I also have dry mouth, I think from my pravastatin for cholesterol? I’ve been on that for so long I don’t remember why anymore but that sounded good....lol thank you for telling me about that, because I thought it sounded really strange, but now I see it’s not so strange! Did you tell your Bariatric surgeon or the dietician? They should warn people about that! Thanks again for answering my message topic!

it's a known issue, but it seems to be pretty uncommon. My dentist had read about it in the professional (dental) literature, but he'd never actually seen it in any of his patients who've had WLS. But no, since I personally haven't had issues with it, I've never mentioned it to my bariatric surgeon or dietitian. But i'm sure they know it happens to some people.

You can be delighted, because fluoride is good for teeth! Trust doctors, why think and talk about them as if they were your enemies?

I’m sorry you thought I don’t trust my doctors. I didn’t mean that at all. They give you a list of all different things that can happen to you as a result of the Gastric Bypass surgery, and I did not see anything about bone loss in your jaw. I don’t know that it would have changed my mind about the surgery, but it’s good to know that this is also a possibility. I trust my doctors and I am still glad I had the surgery.

My niece says she had gastric bypass surgery about 11 years ago now. We hadn’t seen her for a couple years and she says the gastric bypass surgery caused her to lose all her teeth. Never heard of this— is this something to be concerned about?? She has a lot of other problems besides this, but just wanted to throw this question out there and see what comes back.

Vitamin C definitely?! It can cause scurvy that can lead to loss of teeth!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
