Healthy versions of junk food

Well, I'm not talking about eating Doritos and Oreos in moderation. I'm talking about eating a healthier version of chips and Cookies. I'd happily eat an apple, except that it doesn't have the Protein I need. Right now, I'm struggling to get as much Protein in as I'm supposed to, so I look to protein-fortified foods to fill in the gaps. As I said, I eat "real" food for most meals, but it's hard to get 60 grams of protein from meat and dairy alone. I think I'm doing pretty well so far -- I haven't gone off plan once in 4.5 months since surgery (unless you count the 1 net carb tortillas, which are iffy) -- but I have a feeling it will get more difficult as time goes by and I want to be prepared.

I still have a Protein Shake every day as my morning snack. I have to average around 100 grams of protein a day, though, because we discovered early on that I malabsorb it (may have even before surgery, too - but we didn't do a baseline on that, so we'll never know)

you should be able to get in 60 grams a day pretty easily at some point when your food volume increases, esp if you eat protein with every meal. I can get 100 grams a day in without the protein shake if I really focus on it, but I started drinking the morning protein shake because then it pretty much guarantees I'll have 100 grams in by the end of the day, and I don't have to obsess about it all day.

anyway, this was just to say that yes - it can be a struggle to get enough protein the first few months out, but once you're in maintenance and eating more, it's actually pretty easy.

I'm interested in people's thoughts about healthy versions of junk food -- e.g., Protein chips, Protein Cookies, protein cheese puffs... I'm especially interested in hearing from WLS veterans who have successfully kept the weight off for years. Do you eat these things, and if so, where do you draw the line?

I can see these things in two different ways: (1) they'll help me reach my weight loss goals by allowing me to feel less deprived while staying on my plan, or (2) they're dangerous gateway foods that will lead me back into bad eating habits and derail my progress.

I try to eat "real" foods most of the time -- meat, eggs, veggies, fruit, low-fat dairy, Beans -- although I usually eat a Protein Bar for lunch at work (and you can pry my Built Bars from my cold, dead hands!), but sometimes it's nice to eat something reminiscent of the foods I can/should no longer eat. I bought some Quest protein chips, and they're kind of amazing. I use them for protein nachos or crushed as a salad topping to add a little extra protein. The macros are similar (if not a little better) than a Protein Bar, so I once ate a whole bag as a meal, but it felt kind of wrong.

I eat protein chips pretty regularly because they don't trigger cravings for me and they don't seem to slow my weight loss. Protein Bars, however, did slow my weight loss, even when I factored those calories into my total. I'm not sure why but since that was the case I stopped eating them and my weight loss picked up. Like you, I try to eat real food more often than not, but protein chips or shakes can help me stay on track when I'm on the go.

Edit to add: one thing I can't play around with is "healthy versions" of bread, cake or Cookies. For me, there's no such thing. All such products trigger cravings for me and I'll over-indulge in them. So those are pretty much excluded from my diet unless I'm allowing myself a rare treat.

You have to try Peatos, they are game changers. They taste like junk food without any strange health-food texture or aftertaste, but they are healthy. They are made from peas and lentils and taste like hot Cheetos, funyons, etc.

I have done Keto a lot in my life and try all of the low carb breads, pastas and Snacks. These are the best snack for me. Variety 15-pack is 20.00 on Amazon and they have 4g Protein and only about 6-11 net carbs a bag (depending on flavor)

Those look good! The macros aren't as great as the Quest chips, but they could work for an occasional treat.

I recently bought a Quest cookie to try. I used to be a big junk food eater before the surgery, and was craving for something sweet. When I bought it, I was second guessing myself, wondering if this was going to trigger my before cravings, and I would want to overindulge. So what I did was only take 2-3 bites every day. It lasted a few days, and did not trigger anything. It was satisfying enough to get rid of my craving. I think if I ate them all the time, and one at a sitting, I would want them all the time. I only bought one, because I know if they are in the house, I will be more tempted to eat them. I also bought a "guilt free brownie" to try, and it was ok, but not delicious like I wanted it to be. I have some Protein bars in the house, but don't really like them. If you feel like you will be triggered to eat the bad stuff, then I suggest not buying/eating them. Only you know what will work for you.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
