Hairless after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi nana, I'm just now 3 months post-op bypass surgery. I've been tested and stay high with my Protein and b levels. That will help you the most. I've just now started to notice some 'balding' areas in the front part of my hair and expected it. By month 4, it's possible I will have more Hair loss but if it gets to be too much, just planning on a wig.

A lot of people cut their hair short before the surgery and I did the same. I think that helps as I can, for now, bring bangs down. Most any surgeon will tell you that it can happen but the best way to combat it is to just stay up on your protein. The Vitamin B is another thing they will make sure you get enough of.

I am now 86 lbs lighter in 3 months (this includes the loss I had during program leading up to the surgery) and feel like a new person really. It was a tough recovery the first month but I'm so glad I did it. The hair loss is not a problem for me for this outcome.

I already had thin and fine hair before the surgery so I don't really know if it got worse post-op. But I took Biotin for hair and nails for two years post-op and it didn't seem to help. I did just get my hair colored to a lighter color so that the contrast between scalp and hair is less noticeable.

most people do lose some hair, but it's usually just "shedding" that no one is going to notice except you. If it's noticeable, you can always get it cut shorter so it's less noticeable. I actually lost very little hair. Having it come out in clumps (similar to someone on chemotherapy) is pretty rare. I wouldn't have noticed my Hair loss by just looking at myself in the mirror - I could just tell by looking at the amount of hair in my comb after I combed it out after washing it - definitely more than usual for about four months or so.

if it's going to happen, it's going to happen, and there's not much you can do about it other than keep on top of your Protein and Vitamins to keep it from getting worse than it is. Keep in mind that it's temporary - it'll last a few months and then grow back. In the grand scheme of things, it's kind of a minor issue, although I know a lot of people worry about it (I did, too...)

i experience hair shedding. i got my super long hair cut just above my shoulders about 3 months after surgey so i wouldnt be so annoyed w/all my hair everywhere. getting Protein in definitely helps. i notice when i'm not getting my protein, my hair can come out a lot more (not clumps.. just like brushing i end up w/a lot in the brush)

The surgery, shock to your body & reduced caloric intake accelerates your natural Hair loss cycle. Because it’s part of a natural process of loss & regrowth, you can’t stop it happening.

But don’t fear it does stop & your hair is regrowing as you’re losing it. It’s just your new hair is growing back at its usual rate but you’re losing more quickly.

Whether it will happen to you (highly likely it will). When it will start. How much hair you will lose. How long it will go on for is all individual.

Adding supplements which are supposed to improve your hair will only benefit new Hair growth not your existing hair. It’s already dead.

I understand your worry. I’ve always felt my hair was one of my better features so it was a bit hard to accept when I started shedding more than usual. I decided having thinning hair for a couple of months is a small price to pay for my weight loss & improved health.

Good luck in your journey.

I didn’t notice but then again, I shaved my head at month 3 post op VSG. I did however notice lots of new prickly hairs the month after I had my revision (9months post VSG). It didn’t bother me too much just felt weird growing back in.

I do take hair skin and nail gummies most days and my hair 8 months from shaving is now between ear and shoulder length and my hair had always grown slow before surgery.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
