Foods after surgery

Recommended Posts

I’m curious to know from you guys what foods you have not been able to handle well since your surgery? I have discovered that my new stomach does not like meat of any kind. I love chicken and turkey and have eaten a lot of that my entire life, but now, my tummy does not like it. ☹️ I’m not referring to fried, because I do not eat fried foods. I’m referring to just baked or even chicken from the slow cooker. I chew it very well and take very small bites, so that is not the problem. It does not do it with any other food, just meat.

are you early out? A lot of people have trouble with poultry early out but can eat it again after the first few weeks or months.

purreeee it in the magic bullet with some type of sauce like nacho cheese bbq etc something zippy yet something that helps it go down. It doesn't look appealing but doesnt get stuck

Watch Dr Vuong’s video on YouTube about what to eat after weight loss surgery. He’s a Bariatric surgeon and tells you what you need to know at each stage of the process. Very helpful!

Your stomach obviously doesn't like to eat meat anymore, at least not now. You don't need meat for adequate nutrition, so there is no need to force it down with tricks and hacks.

Dr. Weiner's videos on youtube are a good watch for post-op nutrition as well.

I’ve been able to eat chicken, but very, very slowly. Shrimp has gone down extremely easily so I eat that nearly every day. Good thing I’m in southern Louisiana! Weirdly (for me) I have not been able to eat canned tuna. I liked it before surgery but now I can’t keep it down. I think it’s the smell rather than the texture. I developed a super sensitive sense of smell since my surgery 6 weeks ago which seems to be linked to my taste. It’s faded some, but I sure hope it fades more.

Tolerances after surgery can vary widely, and for various lengths of time. Our program's general rule of thumb was to try new foods one at a time to test for tolerance - if it goes OK, great, if not, try again in a couple weeks. meats can also vary in tolerability depending upon the cut. Dark meat poultry is often better tolerated than white meat - the extra fat helps it go down easier, while white meat is often dry. Likewise different cuts of beef will vary - our surgeon suggested filet to my wife when she was having problems with ground beef (which are usually really cheap cuts ground up) and he was right. Also, gravies and sauces (aka meat lube) can help.

I’m 4 months post op and cannot eat certain spicy foods and if I do, I get an instant burning in my throat! Prior to surgery I could eat a jalapeño pepper no problem now I can’t even eat a pepperoni! I made chicken tortilla Soup and chili and have not been able to eat either. I’m hoping that with time it changes because I really do enjoy spicy foods. I don’t suffer from heartburn it’s just I get this weird burning sensation in the back of my throat if I try to eat something spicy

I am able to tolerate *most* things with no issue except the following:

  • sugar (I will dump if I have too much, too fast, especially on an empty stomach)
  • pork (I have noticed that I get super full on pork faster than any other meat)

Everyone is different, so one will need to pay attention to how they respond to certain foods and make adjustments if necessary.

Good Luck! ❤️

I’m able to tolerate most things. I never loved eggs and I like them even less now. I can’t eat very much pork (too dense and fills me up very quickly). I’m ok with some sugar in foods, but sweet alcohol contain drinks will make me dump.

When I made the move from soft food to regular food, it wasn't the type of food, but how dry it was. Any type of dry food caused me big problems. I had to add a little broth or sauce or gravy to my meat to make it "sit" well in my stomach. My dietician recommended starting with canned or pouched meat like chicken or tuna because it was softer since it was more processed. I did that for about month and then moved on to more "regular" type foods. Now at 11 months out I can handle most anything, but drier dense foods still fill me up very quickly.

I’m two weeks out and feeling nauseous and not able to tolerate tuna or puréed after two to three spoonfuls.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
