I finally received the call today that my surgery was approved and will be on July 16 for Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. I’m a ball of emotions! I started this journey back in September 2019 to complete the long list of insurance requirements with different doctor’s & specialists, and attended WLM each month. Then Covid hit right as I had completed everything on my checklist. I have been in limbo land waiting to see what would shake out.

Honestly, even though it’s overdue I was still surprised that they’re getting me in as soon as they are. I just hope nothing goes sideways from here to there with my date, because that would just be my luck at this point lol! I’m excited to get more active on here with a great group of knowledgeable people! Good luck to all you fellow July surgery patients! See you all on the losers bench!

I am lucky that my kids moved out, savings lots. I have just started the process and I don’t start the pre op diet till July 1st and am saving for the added costs of getting the foods listed on my dieticians diet plan. I am just, like you, trying to figure out the diet when I finally make it to solid food again. Keep smiling, you will find a way. I have just started exploring this site and find it very informative so far. So hopefully I will find good alternatives for more expensive items.

I heard about premiere Protein from other forums. I tasted the peach clear ,tropical punch clear and oates. All are good with 20 grams of protein. the clear needs to be very cold not to get the artifical sugar taste. will let you know more.

Folks with the teeth issues hang in there.....

I am having the sleeve done on July 1st . I am 2 days in on my liquid diet which is the worst thing ever. I have noticed all pre op diets are different , most are allowed to have Jello , Soups, popsicles. I’m not allowed to have any of that! Just Water, shakes and broth. Well needless to say I’m starving and very very weak. Just want to sleep and do nothing , I get exhausted going to the bathroom . I’m very lightheaded and extremely irritable constantly. I have 4 more days to go yet and I’m questioning my ability to be able to go that long. If I could have Soup or something that would help a little I think, but I have asked and the answer is still no. But I am very excited that it’s almost here I started this journey back in October 2019, things got put on hold with corona but it’s finally here ! Any words of wisdom or advice is gladly accepted and appreciated!

Wow that is restricted but you got this! By day 4 you will have energy push thru it. Day 2/3 is the worst :( Don’t let it win! Walk.swim, sing, laugh, paint, dance :) when I get hungry I picture what it will be like and how happy I will be. Keep busy and the days will fly.

Scheduled for RNY on July 8th. Start my liquid diet on June 24th, which I'm dreading 😬 My birthday is July 3rd, so I'm slightly bummed about not being able to do my usual dinner and cake, but that's part of the journey. Makes me wonder where I'll be at for my birthday next year. I'm so nervous, but so excited at the same time!

My surgery is july 7, I start the liquid diet on July 4, I'm not good with this fasting thing.....

That sounds rough. There seems to be a lot of variation in pre-op diet requirements. Some are only three days, and others are up to two weeks. Mine is two weeks, but the first week, I'm allowed to have one actual meal per day (like a Lean Cuisine/Healthy Choice/Smart Ones/etc. under 350 calories with no rice or Pasta -- actually very hard to find ones that meet these criteria!). The second week is liquid only (water, Protein Shakes, broth), but I'm allowed to have 2 servings of Jello and/or popsicles per day.

Have you tried Bone Broth? I found some single-serving cans at the grocery store (haven't tried them yet, though). If you have a popsicle mold, you could try making your own popsicles with flavored water (I assume you're allowed to put no-calorie flavoring like Mio in your water). Unless that's not allowed, either (I can't imagine why this wouldn't be allowed, but I'm not a doctor!).

Hang in there -- you can do it!

Mine is also strict. My surgeon requires a high Protein Meal Replacement shake with protein ISOLATE as the protein. I am having the Bariatric Advantage brand as this was the only one I found that met his criteria. I literally hate it as I finish week one of two of my pre-op diet. It was all I could do to get it down yesterday without gagging. I am allowed broths and flavored waters, but no Jello or popsicles. I am also required to eat 2-4 cups of veggies per day (And only the ones on the short acceptable list), but they cannot be prepared with any oil or even cooking spray, and of course no sauces or any seasonings that contain fat or sugar. It is surprisingly hard to come up with palatable ways to prepare the veggies like this, and they are a bit hard on the digestion without anything else in the belly. That is my sob story. I guess I should be happy about my veggie bellyaches though, since at least I do get to put something in my belly. 🙄

I feel your misery, but we can do this! This is our time to get our lives back from the obesity beast.

Keep on keeping on!!

I'm scheduled July 13th for a gastric sleeve. My pre-op diet starts Monday and its 2 weeks full liquids. I'm allowed broth and sugar free jello/pops/drinks with Protein Shakes. I experimented with shakes a few weeks ago and settled on the Premier Protein ones.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
