SO CLOSE BUT FEELING SO HOPELESS

Recommended Posts

I weighed 302 before I started this journey about a month ago. I lost 12 pounds and then had my appointment with my surgeon. He wants me to lose 10 more pounds and told me to call in after I've lost 5 of that 10 pounds to set a surgery date. I've gone from literally sitting in my bed all day, eating A LOT of whatever sounded good at the moment. Now I feel like I'm eating practically nothing and I'm walking a mile to a mile and a half every day. I've lost 2 of the 5 pounds but I CAN NOT LOSE ANOTHER POUND. I go from 290 to 288, back up to 290 and back to 288 again. I step on the scale and I just want to cry. Honestly, I am on the verge of just starving myself to lose this 3 pounds to get my appointment. I don't know what else to do. I thought the weight would be falling off with all the huge changes I made, but it's just not happening.

What changes have you made?

Are you counting calories? Weighing and measuring everything? Drinking lots of water/non calorie fluids? Doing anything like slimfast or Optifast? What type of foods are you eating?

Do you have any medical conditions or taking any meds that slow down weight loss?

Hello Hop_Scotch, thanks for your reply. I'm getting my surgery through Kaiser and following the pre-op diet they gave me. It's called the 1200 calorie diet but the food is portioned by weight, not by calories. I cant have slimfast it Optifast. I have been following the diet, but I have cheated a couple times. I eat mostly chicken, tuna, cottage cheese, potatoes, broccoli, carrots and things like that.

That sounds like a weight loss stall. They happen after surgery too. Stalls happen to EVERY person who loses weight. The weight doesn't come off in a smooth manner, but in a series of rushes and trickles. You'll always lose weight fast at the beginning, but you can expect a stall to appear 3 weeks - 2 months after you start. It can last 1-3 weeks.

I just got out of a 2 week stall. They are incredibly frustrating and demoralizing, even if you are expecting it - which I was, because I read about it on here.

You can spend a lot of energy tweaking your food or exercise routine if it makes you feel better. (I'd suggest focusing on exercise before you try starving yourself.) But honestly, even if you just ignored it and kept on doing whatever you're doing, it will probably break on its own on about the same time frame.

The important point is not to give up! I know it feels terrible, and people telling you that it's normal and will go away eventually doesn't make it not feel terrible. :( But still, it's normal, it will end, and you'll get there!

Water, water, water, and Bone Broth in between meals. It's got Protein and very little. Alroes, but keeps you full. You can do it! Mind over matter, you've got this!

For meals, I stuck to chicken and veg. My favorite was (and still is) a seasoned chicken breast with either steamed brocolli or aspargus with just a sprinkle of fresh parmasean. I also drank Protein Shakes for Breakfast and lunch which made me feel surprisingly full.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
