Corona delaying weight loss surgery dates? Anyone?

All elective surgeries in my area have been postponed. I would have had surgery sometime in the next couple weeks (I started the whole process on March 13) but as of right now my surgery is tentatively scheduled for May 12, although that is subject to change if current circumstances persist. Overall I know that two months from the very first appointment to date of surgery is quite fast, but I'm just sad that surgery could have been a month sooner. I'm just anxious to get this show on the road already!

So my Doctor’s office called me yesterday morning to set up my pre-op appointment. I went today at 8am and I’m scheduled to proceed with Gastric Bypass on 4/27 at 6am. Originally, things were postponed, but yesterday they called and told me my insurance approved my surgery and asked me what date I was looking at. I told them asap and they got me scheduled. We were asked to wear a mask and everyone in the office wore them as well. Only about 5 people were allowed in and they had the waiting room spaced out for social distancing. We were also screened for high temperature and any Covid-19 symptoms before we were allowed into the office. I’m excited, yet trying not to get my hopes too high in case I get rescheduled in the next 19 days.

Unfortunately my area is having a spike of cases of COVID19, so there are no elective surgeries happening. They actually even temporarily canceled all mediport placements for chemo patients (I work in an oncology clinic) until our surgeons complained because, you know, cancer patients sort of need their chemo.

My PCP just put in the referral for me about a month ago. I haven't heard from them so I called today and the bariatric practice is not scheduling any appointments "until things cool down." I mentioned that it could take a year to which they said, "yeah, maybe." I asked about tele appointments to get me started- nope. I'm so disappointed! They told me to call back in a few weeks to see if they were opening up again. I hope so. I really wish I had settled on this course of action 6 months ago instead. Then I'd already be losing the weight. =(

Hang it there. Trust me and everyone else if you had started like us last year you would be even more disappointed then you are now because we have all had our surgery date come within reach and then taken away because of this pandemic. But try to think positive at least it’s not no it’s just not now and at least we are all alive. I am not a very positive person most of the time but I’m trying! I exercise and try not to fall to far off the healthy eating because when this is all over I don’t want to have to wait one second more then I have to.

I suppose there's a chance it could take a year - but I bet they'll get you in a lot sooner than that. What hospitals are trying to avoid now is getting slammed with this huge surge of COVID patients. Once we're through the surge, that is if they're able to manage the number of COVID patients who show up once we're through the worst of it, they'll probably be able to start scheduling other surgeries again. No one knows for sure, but I'm wondering if by this summer they can start scheduling non-critical surgeries and procedures again. Fingers crossed.

If there's a need to delay the surgery or have it postponed and reschedule it just to give way to treat those who are infected with the coronavirus, Only to hope they can wait for the right time for the surgery to be done. Well, it's still on a case to case basis.

I’ve gone through all the hoops and my insurance has approved and now due to Covid 19 no surgeries are being scheduled. They said probably won’t be scheduling until June. I know it’s best but I just want to get this journey started.

I hear you and feel you pain and frustration! My surgery should have be in a few weeks on May 12. My pre admission testing should have been next Wednesday and I’m sure it’s not happening anymore because I’m in New Jersey. I said I wasn’t going to get anymore cortisone injections for my hip but since my surgery isn’t happening anytime soon I managed to get my orthopedist to get me an injection last week for the pain so hopefully now that was the last because I’m hoping the weight loss will help instead of injections. So trust me all oh us feel your pain and disappointment and are here for you if you want to vent! Remember this to will end! Hopefully sooner rather than later! 🌞

If your insurance has approved you're already on your way. It's one thing you don't have to worry about anymore. :)

My surgery is May 6th...... my pre op class is next week, it will be done remotely. We are going forward as if surgery will happen. I’m keeping my fingers crossed but also know if it is canceled it’s for good reason. 2020 is my year, everything will be ok.

What state are you having your surgery in? I’m just curious.

Mine is scheduled for April 27th. I was just scheduled on Wednesday and not really getting my hopes up due to Covid-19 spreading everywhere. Where are you located, if you don’t mind my asking. I’m scheduled in Memphis, Tn.

I asked my doctor. He said that in my case it is not elective. So I am set for June 8.

I think it is up to the discretion of the doctor and if the surgery is going to fix or help an underlying problem. I have Congestive Heart Failure, Diabetes2, Asthma, and am missing a main artery to the heart (birth defect).

I am glad that I am not going to be delayed, but the reasons suck. Now that I am older, life has forever changed. Embrace what comes. 😀

Mine has been re-re-re-re scheduled now to June 4th.

I feel sorry for the poor nurse who has to keep calling all the patients to keep pushing these dates back. I laughing told her over the phone if its changed again, I was probably going to have to riot. She laughed and said she would bring the poster board if I bought the markers and we could stand around together. LOL.

Its been hard, because after so long of having to get the funds up (cash pay customer because our insurance sucks), getting all the tests done, getting the PTO saved up, I'm at the finish line (of a 5 year ordeal) getting ready to cross it and its like theres a huge STOP sign before I am able to cross it.

I was part of the last group to go through surgery before the coronavirus cancellations.

Had mine March 16th.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
