What's something you wish you had known before losing all the weight?

Recommended Posts

We are all working so hard on ourselves to have good health and a nice body. I have never lost a significant amount of weight before, but I definitely look forward to it. I want to keep up my appearance in the process. What advice do you have for beginners? Maybe something you wish you had known before the weight loss or maybe something that you already know and think it's worth sharing! I want to hear it all. I am personally really interested in ways to fight saggy skin, to keep my nipples pointing forward, and how to avoid the turkey neck once I lose this giant double chin of mine! 😂

For women, I have heard that buying a proper bra throughout your weight loss will help with your breasts' appearance. I don't know how true it is, do you? I personally can't wait to be able to find a bra that fits me properly and isn't some wacky size that's a nightmare to find!

I do wish I had been prepared for the saggy skin, particularly on my neck (which can't really be disguised).

The other big thing for which I was not prepared was the how much of my social life revolved around eating and drinking. It is still awkward to go out to dinner with people and only order an appetizer, with people constantly urging, "Oh, come on--one piece of cheesecake isn't going to make a difference--you are so thin!" I've also given up alcohol completely, and since we can't do carbonated beverages, that basically leaves tap Water as my drink of choice when everyone else is having wine or champagne. I don't mind, but I get tired of telling people I really don't want anything else, particularly when they don't know I've had the surgery.

I went to visit my family/friends over the holidays and realized this. I tried to stick to my diet, but I ended up caving and gaining all the weight I had got off before getting there. I am thinking that I will try to suggest things to do, like card games (instead of going out to dinner) or something else where our hands will be too busy for shoving food down our faces.

I do understand that this will happen regardless, though, and I really need to get myself more mentally prepared so I don't make the same mistake again!

I think I will end up needing some plastic surgery done there myself, but I have seen some who got quite lucky with their necks despite how large their double chin was prior. Hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.. Maybe I will invest in a bunch of turtle necks or some of those full neck necklaces (not actually sure what they are called 😅) until I can afford to have it 'fixed'.

Do you think the exercises for losing the double chin are usable for us? I'm not sure it would matter when there will be such a significant weight loss.

ZO skin health is my favorite for skin. I have a complete regiment with hard core products.

I am checking out their website now! Do you have a specific list you would care to share? I am around your starting weight, but a bit taller - that gives me hope for my tummy's sake! I'm willing to give anything a try!

I have also heard that derma rollers would help with the saggy skin. Maybe using that with some of the products you use now would be even more effective!

Stretch clothes are your friend atm. Rather buy some nice piece of clothing as a reward when you reach little targets.

Good call! I mainly wear dresses and leggings right now, but I think I may try to pick up sewing to see if I can make the dresses into smaller sizes - I just need to learn how to go about it first! Otherwise, I will probably stick to ole' reliable leggings and tank tops along the way. 😎

Don't obsess about the number on the scale.

Easier said than done, friend! I weigh myself every morning and my mood ends up being dependent on it. Today it said I gained 500g and I am pretty sad about that, even though its probably just Water weight since I went over my carbs limit yesterday. Though, when the scale shows I've gained instead of lost, I try to do better for that day. No bread/pasta for me today.. 😅

I went through a real low mood period post op where i cried a lot and felt very depressed. I thought id never enjoy food again.

My relationship with food is very very different now - things can be too sweet! Never thought THAT was possible, I hate meat, it makes me feel uncomfortable in my stomach and grosses me out. I dont generally enjoy food unless its actually something really really good. And i mentally have to know its healthy too or the joy is all gone.

Head hunger is 100% real and probably the most difficult part - even though i dont necessarily want food, when im bored i just eat. Ive learnt the way to help me say no to things is to think about their taste (weird concept i know!). For example, theres a chocolate cake on the table in the staff room I know what choc cake tastes like... so i dont need to eat it! Works well for me

That's an interesting concept! I am normally pretty good in that regard when I am at home, but I do tend to have cravings when I'm out and see something I think is tasty (but know isn't healthy). I will try this out next time I run into this situation! Thank you!

Oh my! Thank you for all the information, @MsMocie! I see a dermatologist pretty often for my psoriasis. I will ask them for advice on my next visit to see what they think is best for my skin. I have a few products, but I don't have a regular regime set up at all! I really want to get focus on my skin more, especially as my psoriasis begins to clear up more.

You'll also loose alot of hair. It's temporary and starts within 1-3 months and will last for 3-6 months. I use nioxin to stop it shedding and give the apperance of fuller looking hair.

I have heard about the Hair loss. I have really thick hair, so I am hoping it won't be too noticeable on me. My husband likes my hair long, but if it looks stringy and gross, then I will definitely consider cutting it (and possibly getting a wig for the time being). I hope I look alright with short hair, though! Thanks for the advice on the nioxin!

If you are like me, both taste in smell and taste buds will change.

I hope that they will change for the better. I would really like to feel more inclined to eat something on the healthier side after surgery!

Iced Water goes down more easily than tempered Water.

Ice water is my savior already! I am not a fan of any drink that's not already cold.

You won't see the change yourself in the mirror. I still see me, 40kg lighter not a change. Take pictures.

Great advice, honestly. I can never see the effect of weight loss on myself. I remember when I worked at a department store, I had lost a bit of weight, but couldn't see it myself. A co-worker eventually came up to me and said she could really tell, which made me feel great, but I would have loved to recognize the difference myself!

Wow. I never realized that the sag can also happen on the neck. This is something I definitely have to watch for.

And food highly revolves around my family. I come from a very cultural background and we see food as a way to gather, share, and connect the family bond and strength. And to really think about it now, that is why alot of people in my island is big.

Great topic! Call me whatever you want to call me, but I'm slightly more worried about my appearance than the actual change in diet - the Hair loss, how to keep my skin as good as it can get, yes I know it'll be flabby but if I can do anything to help that out, I will! Maybe it's because I've had lapband prior and I'm converting to RNY as soon as insurance approves. Maybe it's just me.

It's the same in my family as well and the majority of us are overweight/obese, too. Literally all of our family gatherings have included food and rarely was any of it healthy. 😱

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
