Insomnia SUCKS!

Recommended Posts

It never fails, just when I start catching up on sleep then comes the night where I am wide awake. Sunday nights most often, before starting the new week of work. Or just before I travel.

So I've had a wonderful and restful holiday week. Tomorrow I have physical therapy at 6am, then an MRI on my knee at 9am. It's 1:37am now, and my alarm goes off in 3.5 hours. Is it even worth the bother?

I never had insomnia until I worked at Microsoft in Redmond. Average work days were 12-14 hours, 6-7 days per week. I once calculated my salary if I were paid by the hour, and it was way below minimum wage. But I loved working there, even though I worked 7 years in a 3 year period.

Since then sleep comes and goes. When I am well rested as I am now, well no rest for the wicked I guess. It just seems unfair that tomorrow I will be tired and irritated inside, while I will be so professionally chipper on the outside. I hate the split personality routine, and I just want to go in to work grumpy wearing sweats. Not likely to happen tho, I love spending too much to risk my job.

And it would be ok to be awake if I had something to occupy my mind. Nothing on TV right now worth watching. I finished my Dean Koontz book, and I don't see anybody awake on IM.

So I will sit around here and whine to myself for awhile, while drinking a lot of Water to wash down the SF fudgesicle I just finished. Bleh. Whine. Moan. Grump.

Damned Insomnia! :angry

I periodically have insomnia problems. My doctor gives me a presciption for Imovane (zopiclone) which I use when I am having a bad night. The over the counter sleep aids do bad things to your blood pressure. Zopiclone doesn't.

Thanks, I will talk to my doc. I went to bed around 3 and the alarm went off at 5. I am sleepy now. :D

Great timing, eh? ;)

Insomnia sucks but AMBIEN rocks!

I don't know what happened but a few years ago I started having insomnia. No clue why. I go through periods where I just battle it and stay tired. Then I get sick of it and get an Rx.

I have noticed that since I lost weight I don't need as much sleep. I guess I don't wear myself out carrying around all the extra weight, not sure. But could that be part of it?

I always get insomnia when it happens to be the worst time to get it. Like having a early morning appointment. My mind starts going and I just can't sleep or I get the creepy leg thing where I can't be still. Or I have nerve damage in one foot due to diabetes that sometimes burns/itches so bad I can't sleep.

I have found OTC sleep aids don't do me any good.

As for sleep patterns being weight related. Wouldn't suprise me at all I mean its proven that weight affects hormone levels for all sorts of things like our periods.

And since sleep is affected by various chemicals in our body it would make sense.

Lack Of Sleep Alters Hormones, Metabolism, Simulates Effects Of Aging

It sounds like you have insomnia when you've got things going through your mind. I experience that and take an anti anxiety (like ativan) to help in those situations. Something to think about.

May be. I go through spells of needing little sleep then need lots of sleep. I wasn't tired today at all, so maybe I was just well rested. I will probably take some Tylenol with Codeine tonight since I am sore from physical therapy, and then I should sleep well.

I am a cronic insomniac, have been for years. I was taking Ambien, but had lots of scary side-effects. I am currently taking Lunesta and love it. If for some reason I forget to take it early enough and it is too late to take it, forget it.. I am up all damn night, just laying there, without being able to shut my mind. Then have to get up, go on about my normal routine, with no sleep, not even a minute of sleep.. horrible, horrible.. Love my Lunesta.

I've had insomnia since I was 18 - almost 30 years! It sucks. I used to just go without sleep but found that OTC sleep aids are a godsend. I try not to use them every night, but if I have a couple nights with little sleep I'll use 'em.

On the positive side... (is there really a positive side?) I've watched some of the best old movies during these times and also read hundreds of books too. When the kids were little I used it as "me" time. LOL how sad is that?!

I used to clean at night, I mean intensively clean and organize. Until my husband said I needed to stop that shit, he didn't need his underwear and sock drawers organized every other day.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
