I can feel hunger when hungry, but I don't get the "I'm full" feeling yet .. is this normal? So I eat really really small amounts in fear of "overeating " . Eating small is required anyways, but I really eat small because when I eat, I don't get the full sensation.. 🤦

I have had the same thing, so I measure everything I put in my mouth. These days I can definitely tell if I have overeaten, so hopefully the full feeling is coming along. I have been told that the pain blockers they use during surgery can last for quite a surprisingly long time and they make it difficult to feel the full feeling until it is completely worn off. I don't know how much validity there is behind that theory, but at least it's something.

Sometimes my nose runs when I have had enough to eat. Some people get stuffy noses or hiccups when they have eaten enough too, maybe you have had a sign you can look for?

I didn't think to measure it. What do you use? And i noticed sometimes I will hiccup 🤔 so possibly my sign.. I'll definitely pay more attention to myself to see if I hiccup after a meal every time etc . Thank you!!

I soooo agree with you guys on this. I can get overfull easily (which is my falling back on old habits...and probably a bit of boredom), but it's really hard to find that in-between feeling. I know I need/should to go back to journaling and measuring to get back on track, but creating new habits is easier to do than breaking old ones.

Btw hiccups are soooo a sign of being full. From what I understand, it's the phrenic nerve that gets irritate by the stomach hitting up against it which can cause the hiccups. (Im just someone who had really bad phrenic nerve problems after surgery and was wondering what the damn this is, so Im SOOO NOT a doctor.) So it should mean that we are full. What is really odd is that Ive been laying down chilling in the sofa reading/surfing and I get up, I often have at least one hiccup. Since I often have just one hiccup and it definitely sounds like a hiccup (and not anything really embarrassing), Ive learned to embrace it. Not to mention, it's a nice reminder that my body has changed.

I don't know how far along you are, but the first few weeks you really don't get any sensations like that because 1) your nerves were cut during surgery and it takes awhile from them to regenerate, and 2) liquids and pureed foods go right through you. You're not likely to feel restriction until you move to solid food.

also, some people never get that "full feeling" back. They have to rely on measuring things. I don't always feel "full" - it's more of a discomfort - and I know if I keep eating, I'll probably throw up.

This for sure!!!

I am almost 22 months. I weigh measure and track everything that goes in my mouth!!!

Here's something I wrote yesterday that gives food volumes and explains the diff between weighing and measuring! (I do both. I weight Protein on a scale into a 1 cup measuring cup. My forever diet is 1c volume per meal and 60-80g of protein per day. They are two different things: Part A = 1 cup per meal and Part B = 60-80g protein per day.

I need a measuring cup to make sure I satisfy Part A = no more than 1 cup per meal.

I need a scale to know that I am actually taking in 60-80g of protein per day.

I think the goal is to fill sated, like you satisfied your hunger, rather than full. It took me a few months and I do weigh and measure everything. Now, if I'm eating something like a salad with chicken on it, I'll eat the chicken and maybe half a cup of salad, and then I get a feeling like I've hit a wall. So I stop eating. It's kind of cool!

It takes most people 20 minutes to fill "fullness" which is why eating slowly is important.

I have found that I have VERY little restriction and I'm only..4.5 months out. Because of this and the fact that despite a horrible debacle with grilled chicken nuggets the other day (from eating too fast seems to be the main dr opinion), I also seem to have somewhat of an Iron pouch.

LOL..I still remember poor FluffyChix when I mentioned early on having some 'tummy/pouch' issues..I mentioned eating a P3 pack with sunflower seeds, nuts (I usually only eat 3 or 4 of them) and Jerky. She was..um shocked....that with a sensitive pouch that I would eat nuts and seeds. Ironically, that was the only thing my pouch tolerated and it calmed down a bit.

While I have only eaten something loaded with sugar 2 times..and I"m talking about 1 to 2 tbsps - not saying it was right or wise...or something with carbs at Thanksgiving..again, small amount but STILL..not wise for ME this so early in the journey with that 'honeymoon' period clock ticking away...my pouch was..like doing a happy dance..or maybe it was my addiction which will never be GONE.

Although I wish I had not tried what I did, I learned a very valuable lesson in time to mitigate the consequences of this knowledge that my pouch will not balk at most things and that is I have to be on vigilant guard against what I call trigger foods..or any food that is not in my plan for clean eating. I also know that once again, I need to get a therapist that deals with WLS was my preference but as I also need one that is very experienced with grief, I'm having a hard time finding 1 that does both.

All this being said, since I can consume more than normal at this point, I weigh and measure to ensure that I am getting 'enough' but not too much. I relentlessly log in my fitness pal to ensure I'm hitting my Protein goals and NOT exceeding carbs and fats. When I continue to do this I do notice that my hunger/desire for food is VASTLY CURBED and food is once again, fuel, not anything more which is what it needs to be for me.

I don't worry about not feeling full as that is not a barometer that works for me. I just focus on my macros which definitely help me limit my intake. Honestly, when I'm in the 'groove' and doing all the right things, it becomes almost a chore to think about food but I have to watch out for that as well or I'll find myself at 8 PM needing to get 40 grams of protein still in for the day and late night eating was a bad/old habit of mine.

I had my sleeve done on 11/15/19. Thank y'all for giving me good advice about measuring and good info pertaining to not feeling full! I didn't think about the nerves thing 🤦 I don't know why but it makes so much sense. It's also hard to eat small meals throughout the day because I also don't feel hungry often at all so im thinking that might be normal the first few weeks as well?

Yep! Most people (not all - but most) lose their sense of hunger for a few months. Mine came back at month 5. For others, it's up to a year. Really take advantage of that - it's so much easier to stick to your plan when you're never hungry! Things get tougher when your hunger returns...

Yeah, me too and Im just a little further out than you. Iron stomachs are not something that's talked about here because it's not a problem. I seem to be able to eat almost anything. The only real problems come up with rather extreme foods like coffee house pastries and super fried fast food. BUT Im happy that it feels that way since it's a real deterrent for me eating them. My big worry is about after the honeymoon phase if my new habits are enough.

What is the Iron pouch??? Never heard of it 🥺. And I'm 3 weeks post op and I can hold down anything but I'm just not hungry most of the day , which is new for me (I was use to being hungry often prior to surgery) . And yesss I'm questioning what will be after the honeymoon stage as well !

Basically it is when you can eat basically almost anything and it doesn't affect how your pouch feels. Even during my surgery recovery, I had no problems with my stomach (although my damn shoulder from the abdominal gas and not being able to pee in the beginning was a problem). So for me, there is basically nothing that is off the menu for me unless I dump.

This is not something to try directly after surgery though since the nerves connecting the pouch have not reconnected, so it can cause real problems. ALWAYS follow your surgeons advice.

Ohh okay gotcha. I haven't had any issues with foods except the one time I dumped from trying a food. I haven't tried anything I'm not suppose to have, but I've had no problem with keeping stages of foods down at all.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?
      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
