5 years out need advice please

Recommended Posts

Hi all ,
I am new to this forum so a little bit about me .
I had a Sleeve Gastrectomy 5 years ago and went from 19st 2lb (268lbs) down to 9st 6lbs (132lbs) I looked Ill and people constantly asked my mum If I was anorexic .
This was so much more than I ever thought I would lose .
I went from being morbidly obese to clinically underweight. I struggled to put weight on due to my job at the time being active and not being able to eat much .
I changed jobs and for the past 3 years I have been in an office environment, I know I've got some bad habits and every day is a battle . I've put on 2 stone (28lbs) , I'm still well within my health weight but I'm most comfortable 9lbs lighter.
I went private and paid £10,000 and I'm scared that I will end up where I started.
I'm trying to find out how many calories etc I should be eating to lose my 9lbs and how much to maintain .
I've come so far and I cant let it all be for nothing.

Thank you in advance for your advice.
Thank you for reading my post.

Welcome to the forum,

You have done great. 9 pounds is easier to lose than 50, 60, 100+lbs.

You are not alone; I had a gain my third year and worked it down. Many of us go back to bariatric real food stage diet. (log food, hydrate, and exercise/activity)

Some things to try:

  • Choose a food plan that works for you. Bariatric diet, Keto, paleo, low carb, whole 30, vegan, intermittent fasting. whatever you choose, log your food in Myfitnesspal or baritastic .
  • Weight loss calories are not a one size fits all. Once you know your current calories by using myfitnespal, You can lower the calories (or raise them) to see where your body loses weight.
  • Get temptations out of the house
  • I’m a sleeve. Years out, my surgery restriction is less. I can consume more food volume. I found ways to fill the extra space without going over my calories
  • Sugars and extra carbs cause craving and hunger. Detox off them
  • Keep healthy options for sweet and salty cravings on hand.

Join the Sept weight loss challenge for motivation.

Gosh! You look amazing! Congrats on 5 years of maintenance and for changing your life!

You're so smart to nip this in the bud at 10lbs. Ten lbs is so do-able!

I totally get the fear of regaining it all and failing weight loss! It's a real risk for the rest of our lives. But I do have to believe that we are not doomed to regain. In almost every case of regain we see, there is a reasonable explanation for the regain--with a rather simple solution. Usually it's a result of us backsliding into old habits, old food preferences, life stress, emotional coping tools using food, depression, change in exercise quantity/intensity, differences in total daily activity...etc.

@Healthy_life2 gave you very awesome advice. It really works. I've seen so many vets come back with regain who subsequently lose it by going back to their forever diet following WLS and following the tenets of their docs. The tools still work, we just have to remember that the program works and we have to work the program and help our tool!

Hope you will stick around and post with us. This is a very informative, helpful, and fun place to hang out!!! Your journey will help a lot of us as we watch you take your control back.

Thank you so much everyone , I dont know why I'm particularly finding it hard right now.
I was part of another group at the beginning but felt I needed a change .
I've had a look at the bariatric pal Snacks etc and they look great however they are really expensive with me being in the UK.
Snacking is my biggest enemy and binge eating chocolate and biscuits. As you all know it's still possible after the surgery . I have a family so cant stop the sugary snacks in the house although everytime I crave those kind of foods I'm trying to remind myself of that anxious /scared feeling of when I get on the scales and my weight has gone up.
It's crazy that my brain still behaves some of the time like it did when I was really fat.
Today I have tracked my food so far although I'm struggling to track my evening meal .
I used to fail at dieting because I hated tracking .
I know if I tracked before I started to concentrate on my eating again then I would have been eating near on 2000 calories some days.
I'm trying to stick at between 1200 and 1300 calories owr day this week and going to see how I get on.
Going to pilates tomorrow which will be good.
I also have an obsession with the scales and part of my challenge is keeping off them then getting down when they dont say what I want.
I'm saving most of my calories for the evening as that's when its the hardest time for sure .
Thank you again xx

Way to go! You are getting your head back in the game. Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out.

I never use the bariatric store. When you deprive cravings, you want them more. Are there better options that you can buy for sweet and salty cravings? Hope others can jump in here and help with healthy sweet and salty snacks that are more cost effective.

make sure food advice fits your food plan..

Sweet:

  • Plain fruit, fruit dipped in sugar free cholate Syrup
  • Salad greens, chicken, strawberries, blue cheese and pecans Skinny girl raspberry vinaigrette.
  • Dannon lite n fit Greek yogurt
  • sugar free popsicles
  • Roasted pumpkin and apple drizzled with sugar free maple syrup. sprinkle with cinnamon, (small amount with your Protein goes a long way)

Salty:

  • Veggies dipped in hummus (cut calories by mixing plain yogurt in hummus)
  • Chicken fajitas or taco salad (no tortilla)
  • Parmesan cheese crisps
  • Cup of chicken broth.< /span>

I try really hard (especially in losing mode) not to "plan" or "schedule" for cheats. It makes it that much easier to have one...like I've already given myself permission or something so then I get to bypass the rationalization and reasoning phase. Right? LOL.

But like @Healthy_life2 said, it's important to know your capacity for pain and/or deprivation. Ideally you want to limit the hedonic pleasure center. When you give yourself high reward, high value meals, it causes your brain to defend a higher set point, making weight loss slow to a creeping crawl. Frustrating and tough to be compliant with slow weight loss.

So I would go for painful abrupt deprivation and get the weight back off, then try to ease into a maintenance plan that does include a few limited indulgences that are well planned and can be incorporated into your daily macros for maintenance. But that's just me. I figure I can bear pain as long as I know there is an end.

If I add extra treat calories now, I guarantee the compliance will be worse, the losses slower and I will get diet fatigue before ever seeing my goal or finish line. So it's a tough call. Right?

Now, YOU are the mommy and the boss of cheese and ketchup. So why can't you clean out the house/pantry? Why not ONLY keep the natural healthy things around? Make it tough for the kids or hubs or you to eat crap!? Would/could that work?

If not, I will be back with snack suggestions that you can make yourself rather than buy and it shouldn't totes kill your diet plan. But for now...you have to remember your WHY. WHY did you have the surgery? WHY did you endure the deprivation to lose all your weight? WHY aren't you loving yourself enough to self-discipline your food choices? These are the tough parts of headwork we all have to entertain. ((hugs))

Some great snack ideas there so thank you . I am vegetarian and have a lactose intolerance which makes it harder for me .
I am finding that if I give myself a low calorie treat daily (usually in the evening) this gives me the satisfaction and I dont crave as much .
If I stop myself from having something completely I want it all the more and end up binging .

I do understand what you're saying with regards to planning a snack .
With regards to getting rid of all of the unhealthy Snacks, I have reduced and swapped certain foods that regularly used to be on my shopping list .

Agree with all - when I want a snack or chocolate I first have 8 oz Water wait 30 minutes then reevaluate If I am still thinking of it I may or may not.. usually I have moved on. I too worked off a regain in the last months. You are not alone.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

Good Luck this procedure is well worth it I am down to 249.6 lb please continue with the process..

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

      3. Doughgurl

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

    • LeighaTR

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
