How do you have your coffee?

Recommended Posts

I’ve been cleared to have coffee (yay!) but my problem is, I only like my coffee with either the flavored Creamers that are bad for you or with lots of sugar- both a no go from my nutritionist. I’m not a huge fan of Splenda or the sugar free syrups either. I’ve been debating on even starting to drink coffee again if I’m not going to be able to have it the way I enjoy it. So my question for you guys is- how do you have your coffee post op and still enjoy it?

A couple thoughts (none of which might work)

I wonder if you're taste buds have changed so that you'd either like it without the creamer or sugar or a little milk &/or artificial sweetener would work.

Some folks like coffee with some Premier Protein shake in it ( I don't, but a friend uses either vanilla or caramel)

I find that cold brewed coffee is much less acidic and much more flavorful. I used to drink coffee with a lot of half and half, but I can drink cold brew black. I keep it in the fridge for about a week. Cold brew also reheats nicely - it doesn't get the bitter taste of most reheated coffee. This recipe works well. https://www.thekitchn.com/big-batch-cold-brew-coffee-257177

Im one of the folks that uses caramel Protein Shakes like Premier or Slim Fast Advanced in my coffee. Creamy and no additional sugars.

I use Truvia instead of sugar or any other sweetener for everything. I’ve used it since before my surgery. I’m 14 months post op.

I use Premier Protein! I prefer the caramel or the Cookies and cream.

I kept trying to find the ultimate coffee drink that truly satisfies my sugary iced coffee cravings. I tried the caramel Premier Protein shake with a double shot of espresso over ice like a lot of people suggested. It was just meh to me. So earlier this week, I bought a jar of Maxwell House instant Decaf and added some to my caramel shake, mixed well and over ice. It was like the heavens opened up! Oh, so good!! I like a nice strong coffee flavor. I also like the Maxwell House French Vanilla powder - sugar free and Decaf. Strangely, I don't desire hot coffee much at all since surgery. One of those weird things that happens to some of us with no explanation.

That’s a great money saver too! Daily Starbucks, even for just an espresso shot, adds up to a lot more than instant coffee granules.

Wow! I wondered if anyone else had lost their taste for coffee after the surgery! I was addicted to coffee before! Now I can take it or leave it!! I've removed caffeine from my diet and I can say I feel better!

Yes I did, it regave me GERD- like symptoms, the main reason I had an RNY , even the Decaf Versions. If you are in USA though, another option would be Glucerna' s Butter Pecan shake instead of Caramel, Vanilla or Even chocolate Premier Protein to make it a Mocha taste. A And I remember one Bari- PAL saying coffee tastes like someone stirred dirt into her Water, always wanted to know LOL if she ate dirt as a child, but wasn't brave enough!

Believe it or not I can drink mine black now, no creamer needed. That, or I mix it one part coffee, one part Premier Protein shake & pour over ice. Nice iced latte without the price.

Thank you! I am only 20 days post-op and use it in my tea with a little honey. I was wondering if I was causing any weight-stalls...

I used to only like my coffee very sweetened. I’ve worked on lowering the amount of sweetness to none now, with just a bit of cream/milk.

My process started with Protein Shake in the coffee, and I just lowered the amount of Protein shake until it was gone, and only a smidge of milk remained. My taste buds got used to it, which I never thought possible.

Usually black as the night, but not too strong.

On weekends or when on vacation I sometimes make myself a soy latte if I'm in the mood for it (I actually found a soy milk that's good for making a latte and tastes good when poured over a muesli as well).

---

On a side note:

@Goldn02Grl interestingly enough I'm worrying more about my teeth than the calories when I'm having some sugar in a beverage (e. g. in a strong Espresso).

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
