Under 25 and choosing this?!

I am 19 (was 18 during surgery) and I understand what you mean; pay no mind to it, though. No one should be giving their opinions to your life weight loss decisions, especially if they’ve never cared enough to help you in your past weight loss attempts. You do you! I feel great after my weight loss surgery (I’m 2 Weeks Post-Op / Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy) and if you’re serious about getting surgery, you will too! 💜

I know a few girls who had surgery at 18... They wanted a better life for themselves before they went to university

And on the Obverse of That Coin- we have Me- who refused to Die Obese and had RNY surgery at 72 years, 8 months and 10 days last 5th September. When we come to the point, When We fear Surgery less than continuing as we Are, the Time is Right÷ No matter what our Current Age Is!

So, I'm 23 and set to have RNY on May 30th. I've never second guessed my decision for a moment, but for my family and close friends that I have told, they seem to equate youth with the ability to just diet and exercise to combat obesity (trust me...been there, done that)--stating, "But, like...have you tried just eating healthy and exercising? You're not even 25, and this is like major and a lifelong commitment."
I'm sure many of you, no matter the age, have experienced this. I guess I wish the stigma was better for all of us. For anyone that is under 30, do you feel similarly?
Until all the negative people have walked in your shoes pay no attention to them. I hope everything is going great for you.

I am waiting for approval from insurance and then surgery. At 57 I just quit caring what people will think.

I'm a bit late here, but I got sleeved 8 days before my 19th birthday. Do I struggle? Yeah. But it's still the best decision I've made in my life. I'm able to move easier. I can sleep better. I can SHOP. Its completely changed my life already.

Why should I keep living in pain and getting worse and worse just because I'm young? I was dieting since I was 12. I had tried lots of stuff. I was ready.

F them.

Just tell them it only gets worse as you get older!

I was skinny as a young person and managed to gain 100 lbs from when I graduated high school.

Most everyone gains weight as they age but some of us do it with gusto (raising hand). If you are starting out overweight, unless you get it under control through either diet and exercise or WLS (and diet and exercise) it will only get worse.

I wish I had been able to keep weight off when I would lose it but it never happened and naturally I got heavier and heavier as I aged.

Only you know what is right for you. Whatever you choose to do, I wish you success.

I'm 38 and wish I had done it 10 years ago. You're so young and have so much life left. I feel like I lost so much life being obese and rejecting outings and get togethers because I was embarrassed. Do what you have to do to live your best life.

This and so much more of this.

Also around the same age and wish I had the courage in me to accept diet and exercising simply wasn't enough and I needed another tool. I wish even if not in my 20s, wish I could have gotten it done even 5 years back when the thought crossed my mind.

So, similar to many here, I would say "go with your gut instinct" and trust your decision to take control of your life when you still have so much to live for. Losing out on many youthful experiences owing to your weight only brings out regret when you reach a certain age.

Wish you all the best for your upcoming surgery if you decide to go for it.

I had surgery recommended to me a few times in my late 20s and early 30s but I was convinced I could lose weight the "old-fashioned" way, and did... but kept gaining it back each time. I don't think I was ready to do the work to have the surgery back then; I probably wasn't emotionally ready to change my eating permanently. I'm still not sure I'll be able to keep the weight off!

ETA: I had surgery a few months before I turned 42

I remember going to WW at that age and loosing 50lbs. There was no loose skin after a short while. (Can’t say the same at 54yrs!). Give your body two years to reabsorb itself. My knees never looked smooth, but everything else tightened right up, you will too.

You are so smart! No one recommended WLS to me till later in life. I suffered through years of dieting, and losing/gaining weight, till I finally gave up and came to peace with the idea that I would always be obese.

It was a few years later when a doctor suggested I look into it. I had no idea it was for people like me, with BMI of 40.

Kudos to you for getting more years out of your procedure, and being healthy longer!

i just realized this is an older post but for anyone else considering surgery I will reply. I was able to lost a significant amount of weight at your age so in part they are correct. Only problem is I put it back on like ten pounds a year on average until I needed this surgery. I did other yo-yo diets in between so it wasn’t a straight line but it averaged about ten a year. My body just wasn’t happy at a lower weight pre surgery and even trying really hard to keep it off I gained. The surgery adjusts your “set point” which makes a new happy weight for your body. A diet doesn’t do that so you are constantly fighting your body.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
