swallow vitamin vs chewable - how long after surgery

Recommended Posts

I was told I couldn't take a pill larger than a dime (I had RNY). I am taking chewable vitamins no but the procure brand has a capsule but it shows a picture of it the size of a dime. Is anyone here able to take a pill that big. I does say the capsule is a quick dissolving veggie base so I don't think it would get stuck but I'm hesitant to try to swallow anything the size of a quarter yet.

I had no problem taking the huge Citracal pills when I got home after my bypass.

I take the ProCare quick dissolve sometimes. I alternate between those and chewable. 6 weeks post op... most days I prefer the chewables still for some reason. But I can swallow them with no issues. I have to take them right before bed though. Otherwise I get really sick.

At 2.5 months post-op I attempted to swallow one of those huge Calcium pills, and threw up about 45 seconds later. About 2 weeks after that, thought I'd try one a Multivitamin capsule, which was a tiny bit smaller, but still way bigger than a dime. I threw up about 2 minutes later.

Fast forward to last week (am almost 5 months post-op), and I successfully swallowed that multivitamin, and kept it down. Am going to try the calcium pills again when I run out of my current chewable stash.

P.S. I also know of others who were able to swallow the big pills 1 week after surgery, so it really all depends on the person.
