She said i'll have to eat 100 grams of Protein after surgery and this sounds like A LOT! No way i'll be able to do this! I feel like she has a problem with the fact that i'm a vegetarian.

How do you guys eat after surgery? I hate this Protein, protein, protein mentality.

My doctor said women must eat 60-60 grams after surgery, and men 80-100. so no... I don't think she has a problem. That is what you need.

You can use plant protein, protein doesn't = meat.

I am not full vegan, but try to eat as little animal product as possible.

I use Isopure flavorless protein in my Soups and drinks to help hit my number. But I also use this Vegan Protein from 1st Phorm... when I tell you the french toast flavored one in coffee is AMAZING, it really is. They have a lot of flavors and other vegan options.

According to my nutritionist the calculation is around .8grams of Protein per 1kg of weight. As you lose weight your Protein requirements will be less. This is why initially most people have to use Protein Shakes but as they lose weight they are no longer required .

When I last saw my nutritionist I weighed around 60kg and she calculated I was getting around 60g of protein per day so I no longer needed shakes.

Not getting enough protein is very risky. Your body will try to get it where it can. You don’t want your body to start breaking down all it’s muscles , particularly the heart

Good to know! Thank you for your post! According to that calculation, I need 42g of protein a day. I have a 30g Protein Shake every morning and I try to eat high protein meals, so I’m definitely meeting/exceeding my protein goals. I still try to get about 60g of protein a day, but I don’t track it like I did at first. We don’t produce or store the protein and I have a huge fear of Hair loss, so I’ll ALWAYS meet the protein requirements.

Right now, 3 1/2 months out from my RNY, I myself am also struggling to get enough Protein in. I'm also struggling just to eat enough in general because I rarely feel hungry. I'd say I probably get about 20g protein a day and my nutritionist has already warned me that unless I can turn it around soon, I'm going to start seeing the negative results of lack of protein (muscle wasting, impact on immunity, affecting my hair, etc.).

I got in the habit of making sure I have 30g Protein Shake a day. I have Premier Protein Cafe Latte when I wake up so I get my protein and caffeine for the day. That way I don’t fill up on other liquid or less protein dense foods. I consider it the same importance as taking any other Vitamin or medication. I even drag them on vacation or ship them where I’m going to be. Protein is really important. Do your body a favor and nourish it. It’s important.

If there's a Protein Shake without artificial sweetners, I would love some recommendations. My neurologist just changed my rescue medication, put me on a new medication and had to give me something to break a 20 day rebound Migraine. Artificial sweetners are a trigger and when I was in the shake phase, I was having Migraines everyday as well.

Protein is a big one. My nutritionist told me I needed 110 grams daily. I normally get around 100. I start the day with a quasi smoothie- frozen fruit with unflavored Protein Powder - whip it up with an immersive blender. That's about 30+ grams. You can use more than a scoop. I end the day with another one. During the day, I try to focus in protein enriched meals. Each evening I eat a Protein Bar that contains around 21 grams of protein. Careful of Protein Bars with little protein.

Sorry about your Migraines. I get them too, but Vyepti infusions have hugely helped!!! Haven’t needed my rescue medication and went from every day migraines to almost never.

Not sure what shakes do or don’t have artificial sweeteners, but you could try making your own with unflavored Protein powder mixed with whatever you drink. I make smoothies without the protein as a treat blending crushed ice, a tiny bit of skim milk, a banana, and fat free chocolate Syrup. Feels indulgent but only really some banana as far as calories. A nutritionist could probably recommend certain shakes. Also, costco sells zero calorie Whole Earth sweetener made from Monk Fruit and erythritol. It’s not like Splenda, sweet n low, or Equal. Maybe it would work for you as an alternative to the artificial sweeteners or sugar. It’s all I use now!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
