I get my sleeve on April 15th. The three weeks went by really quickly and I lost 17.2 lbs on the shakes. I am nervous by excited at the same time. It has really helped me being a part of this group. I have learnt so much from all of you. I will let you know how it went soon

Hi all,

I’m concerned about having a shower. How do you NOT get the 5 incision sites wet???

So without sounding gross, I have been having a sponge clean/bath (not in the bath) Definitely worried about the drain site, as the bandage over that is a thick cloth one.

I so hope they all heal well with no infection!!!

Otherwise got home yesterday. Sipping away on Optifast shakes and Protein Water.

I took a shower the day I got home. I was told that I could wash the incision sites just not scrub. Then to pat dry. I haven’t seemed to have any issues. However, I didn’t have a drain so not sure about that site. Possibly cover it with Saran Wrap or a waterproof bandage if you are worried.

TheFlinstones. I think you can probably buy some big bandages that can cover up your incisions. The to all the sides of the bandaids you use this medical tape. I’m pretty sure Dollar tree sells them. If not then you can also check a pharmacy. I think this might help. If anyone else thinks otherwise please do correct me.

Alright y’all... here’s the update. VSG done 4/11, surgery lasted an hour. And get this... ITS NOT AS BAD AS YOU THINK!!! Honestly!!! I was up and walking around 6pm. I was in and out of sleep all day but so doable! The day after 4/12, I was perfectly fine, the drain was a bit uncomfortable but that was all! I got a slight sore throat/cough that night and that is what made my stomach hurt. It was bearable pain but still hurt. Today I was discharged and they took the drain out at 7am and I have to say that is what hurt the most about everything (and I didn’t even hurt that much). Other than than energy levels are good. The key really is WALKING!!! As much as you can!!!! Take SUPER small sips of the Jello, apple juice, chicken broth and you’ll be fine! No vomiting or nausea for me. Honestly everything was a lot better than I expected. For those of you worries about the pain or the after affects, DONT WORRY! Don’t let that hold you back!! If I can do this, so can you!!

I second this, I was told I could shower, just not scrub the incisions. Pat dry, I’ve showered each day since Wednesday and haven’t had any issues so far. I just keep my back to the Water stream and let the water just kinda run down my front. I just soap above and below and let it rinse off. My incisions are stitched internally and glued. Hope that helps!

@TxStar09

My 5 incision sites are covered in steri strips. But they look like Water can soak through them.

I know at hospital they wanted me to have a shower but I just sponged there too as I had the IV still in my hand. Seemed all too much to juggle.

I don’t mean to sound too worried or negative. Just curious and not wanting any infection.

I hope everyone is doing super well.
Love & hugs to all.

Good luck! It will go quick. I’m still in a little shock that it’s all happened and yet so excited to be on this journey. I can remember the two weeks before feeling like forever.

@TheFlintstones I completely understand. My incisions were glued. You don’t sound negative and it is completely understandable to be worried. This is a huge change that we have made in our lives and one we don’t want to screw up right out of the gate. If you have some waterproof bandages, place them over the sites and then enjoy a shower. You will feel so much better. 😊

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
