February 2019 weight loss buds

Recommended Posts

Anna, I started out low, too, and am just amazed at everyone’s progress. I’ve lost about 44 lbs, but 13 of that was from preop diet. I’m losing super slow - I’m lucky if I hit 2 lbs per week. Plus I had a stall that lasted over a month!

Start weight 200
Surgery date 2/13/19
Current weight 156

2 pounds a week would be amazing. I was feeling all good about myself on Friday. Saturday I was weighing myself and my husband said “you’re not still losing weight are you!?”. He’s right! I’m really not. Down half a pound and then up a pound and down a pound and up half a pound... Much of this is my fault though. Much of this is alcohol. I have always been a drinker but I stopped for the surgery. Started drinking again a few weeks ago. Burned and was distasteful at first but then I found one wine that I could tolerate and worked myself up into FOUR drinks on Friday and four on Saturday! Nothing yesterday. Nothing today. But 4 glasses of wine is basically a bottle and that’s probably 1500 cal! I don’t know why I am self sabotaging... I’m blowing my chance at success but I’m trying to get back on track now!

I’m impressed with your weight loss! I think you are doing amazing!

Cavit pinot Grigio is my kryptonite. Cheap, readily available in every store I go to shop in, and goes down easy and delicious. If I don’t have it in my house, I do not drink. I have now drank my entire supply which was several bottles. I will not be buying this item again anytime soon.

Had my appointment with my surgeon -- he wants me to do a barium swallow to check for strictures.

Anyone else have trouble with strictures?

Hi, Emzbee. So good to have you back!

First, you look adorable in your latest photo--and I like the black hair!

I'm so sorry to hear that you might have a stricture. However, the upside is that there may be a reason you have been having difficulties, and it can be fixed. That should make you feel a bit better.

As for the barium swallow, it's not a big deal. (You may remember that I did one when I had a leak. It was at 10:00 at night in a deserted area in the basement of the hospital--very creepy.) At any rate, mine was essentially tasteless and really easy to drink. Gottajustdoit, perhaps there are different kinds and yours was nasty.

Please do keep us posted, and I'm looking forward to hearing good news from you soon!

I've been throwing up mucus still, after eating - a ton of it today. Not every meal, but I'd say at least every other day. I just texted my surgeon to ask if this is normal and I just get a response of 'no'. O_o

So, let's talk Vitamins. I originally got tablets, but they were too big for me to swallow. I then got chewables, and they are so disgusting that they literally make me nauseous.

Before I try yet another type, I'd like to hear which type of vitamins you all prefer. What about soft chews? gummies? Quick melts? powders? liquids? Is there anything that's not disgusting?

By the way, I use Bariatric Advantage brand, which my doctor recommended--but I'm open to other brands.

So, did he want to see you? Or did he recommend a trip to the emergency room? What comes next? I hope you are doing okay!

He didn't say anything except for 'no', so I'm guessing I'm not at death's door. Hopefully! I'm seeing him Wednesday so I will ask him to elaborate. In the meantime, I am just not feeling great. I have a few good days and then I have a couple of days where I'm throwing up, but not food... mucus. Right now I'm feeling really sick to my stomach and threw up all the liquid I had drunk. What was worrying was seeing a tiny (I do mean tiny) amount of blood, but that's probably just because I've irritated my esophagus right?

I am surprised your surgeon only replied with a "no" without an explanation. I would definitely call him tomorrow and ask him what is happening. Sorry, I don't want to frighten you, but unless you have severe environmental allergies that create drainage, vomiting mucus seems abnormal to me. I hope you get answers soon.

Hi Recidivist--my NUT gave out a bunch of Vitamin samples prior to surgery and I found that for me, the only ones I found doable were the soft chews. I take the black grape Bariatric Advantage multivitamin soft chews (AVOID the orange-flavored ones--ick) and the Pineapple-flavored Iron plus C chews. They start off sweet and then have a sour ending...very strange, really, but they do NOT taste minerally at all. I also take Fiber gummies to manage Constipation and I think of them as little treats (like Gummy bears). If I didn't enjoy the soft chews, I'd go for the gummy versions. My NUT even said Flintstone vitamins were OK for the multivitamin!

Froufrou I would agree that the blood is from your esophagus, but I hope he can explain the issue to you.

I’m apparently in a stall. I had my 3 week stall early, so I guess I’m having the 3 month stall a bit early as well. I’m sure hoping it’s a stall anyway. Of course the fear is that I’m done losing and will be stuck at 193lbs

Froufrou,

I vomit clear mucus. Until I gave up on food (more or less), I would vomit after food, all the food in my pouch plus around 1/3 to 1/2 cup clear mucus.

As an example, on Saturday I picked the cheese and crust off of a bread roll. Spent the next 10mins on my hands and knees on the floor vomiting that mixed with mucus.

Maybe you have a potential stricture? Seems strange that you'd vomit mucus without food, though... Obviously the food is going somewhere!

Sending you a big hug! [emoji4]

Thanks Taylor and Gotta for the Vitamin recommendations. I'm using Bariatric Advantage now (chewables--yuck) and I had seen their soft chews. I was actually interested in grape and watermelon-strawberry, so I think I'll pull the trigger and try one of each. I'll let you know how it goes!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
