Anti depressants post op

I’m currently on 60mg of cymbalta and 300mg of extended release Wellbutrin. My psychiatrist said I need to stay on these for the time being.
I haven’t asked my surgeon yet about taking these after surgery.
Can anyone tell me there experience with taking anti depressants after surgery?

  • That's wild. I was taking my antidepressants the day after my surgery. Just goes to show... doctors are amusing.

The only day I didn't take my antidepressant was my surgery day. I resumed taking it again the day after. I have had zero issues swallowing pills. Ask your doctor. I know that I wouldn't have been abl

  • Continues to boggle my mind how varied the instructions/advice is from the different Doctors we all have.

I was able to take my psych meds literally the morning after surgery, I had VSG. If you are taking any extended release, you cannot crush those so you will need to be able to take them whole. I think it all depends on what your doctor says and what your stomach can handle. I didn’t realize so many of us suffer from so many mental issues. I suffer from Major Depressive Disorder and OCD. If anyone feels like talking feel free to DM me, or we can exchange email addresses if you would like. It might be nice to talk to someone with similar issues as mine. My wife was sleeved 2 months before me, but she doesn’t suffer from any mental issues like I do.
It really is amazing how many of us deal with mental health. And even more amazing that society often treats us like our weight is the reason.

I'm working on my PhD in Health Psychology and I plan on doing my dissertation on how therapy effects the longterm success of bariatric patients.

People forget it's a chemical imbalance. And when we have part of our stomach removed, not only are we losing access to serotonin (90%of it is produced in our gut, not our brain), which controls our mood, we're losing our main coping tool, and we're releasing hormones from our fat stores !

Basically we can become a hot mess! ?

I am on the same thing. My psychiatrist split the Wellbutrin into two doses. I take 200 - so 100 twice a day. Since the Cymbalta has to be opened up, studies show one may not be getting 100 percent of the dosage. I am now on 60 mg twice a day. I was having a terrible time because my psych meds were not right until this change was made. I’m not totally ok yet, but it’s only been a couple of weeks. I am feeling better every day though. The study I’m speaking of my psych doc found while I was in his office. If you remain on the same dosage, you’ll only get 60 percent of the prescribed Cymbalta dosage. Good luck!

The one I am currently on is Escitalopram. Wellbutrin made me gain a lot of weight and had some really bad side effects

I've had such a hard time with getting my mental health meds related. I'm finally settled on respirodone and prozac.
