How to research number of surgeries

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the forum but have been researching WLS for a year. Initially decided on VSG then MGB but have finalized to Duodenal Switch. I am 5'6 245 with OBSA, HTN, joint issues and premetabolic syndrome. I have heard DS is best for OBSA, plus Type 2 diabetes runs in my family even the skinnier ones in my family usually get it in their 40s/50s. I really do not want that. So have decided DS is best for me.

My question is I will be going to Mexico for my surgery as I am selfpay and as an Army Veteran the VA does not do DS. How do I find out how many surgeries specifically DS a surgeon does on average in a year? What would be a good number?

Does anyone know if Dr. Illan perform DS surgeries regularly? If so is it a single anastomosis or the traditional (2). I have seen on the website he does do the surgery but have not seen any reviews or former patients.

If anyone can recommend a surgeon that can perform the surgery well and is proficient please let me know. Looking for traditional DS.

Thanks 😊

I recommend Dr. Ungson or Dr. Esquerra at Mexicali Bariatric Center. They are the preeminent DS surgeon’s in Mexico and will gladly tell you how many DS surgeries they’ve done.

Note that they perform the true standard of care DS surgery. They do not do the misnamed “DS” surgery (aka SIPS, SADI or Loop) that has poor results (malabsorption ends at 12 months, leading to insufficient weight loss) and is considered experimental in the US.

This girl (Dixie) from Canada got the DS with a single anastomosis done. She went to Mexico for the procedure. I really enjoyed watching her videos.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
