New study (2018) reveals the pros and cons of gastric bypass surgery in obese individuals with type 2 diabetes

Recommended Posts

While cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and all-cause mortality risk is reduced after gastric bypass, the following "cons" were also revealed in a 2018 European study*:
.
-gallstone and gallbladder disease
-gastrointestinal ulcer / reflux
-bowel obstruction
-abdominal pain
-anemia
-malnutrition
-psychiatric diagnoses
-alcohol abuse
.
*some of these conditions are short-term complications

That's a slightly but not vastly different list to the one I have been given

Anastomotic leak

Gallstones

Dumping Syndrome

Stomal stenosis

Bowel Obstruction

Marginal Ulcer

Persistent Constipation or diarrhoea.

Risks for WLS in general also include

Poor healing

Vomiting

Poor weight Loss

Persistent abdominal pain

lactose intolerance

Incisional or internal hernia

cardiac arrhythmia

Hepatitis

Life long Vitamin supplementation

Loss of muscle mass

Depression

Death!!!!!

It's all about being aware. Following instructions. Managing issues when they arise. Most of the risks are minor when compared to the risks of remaining obese

Thank you for expanding this information, elcee. I confined my list to the conditions outlined in the article. It was not meant to be an exhaustive list but a summary of what was mentioned in the article.

Yes, awareness is key.

Some may fault me for being "negative" by presenting some downsides of weight-loss surgery, but, I believe, that being prepared to make an informed decision with all available information and also being ready for unfortunate events post-surgery is not only practical but realistic.

I feel like I already had my gallbladder out, was already on antidepressants, had gerd, and was slightly anemic... so didn’t have much to lose... except weight. 😂😂

Awarewness is definitely key. The rule here is that surgeons have to give a patient an information sheet with all the pro's , con's and possible complications prior to scheduling any surgery. It's called informed consent. Isn't it the same there too?

The article say's "potential " adverse events that require monitoring and potential treatment. Risks with all medical procedures and disease. good information.

Complications with type two diabetes left untreated

“Diabetes is a condition expected to gradually progress over time. If type 2 diabetes goes untreated, the high blood sugar can affect various cells and organs in the body. Complications include kidney damage, often leading to dialysis, eye damage, which could result in blindness, or an increased risk for heart disease or stroke. Unfortunately, the effects of high blood sugars are not limited to this,” Dr. Aluri says.

Chronic conditions, like neuropathy (nerve damage), gastroparesis (issues with stomach emptying) can also develop. Diabetes mellitus, Dr. Aluri says, could kill someone if not diagnosed and managed properly. Extremely high blood glucose can even lead to coma (hyperosmolar hyperglycemic non-ketotic state).

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
