Even after the 6-week progressive, post-op diet is over, there are a few things my doctor will NOT allow. ever. period.

1. soda or carbonated drinks (this includes beer

2. nuts with papery shells on the outside

3. popcorn

4. anything with whole peppercorns

Nana - I totally agree with you. That is my main reason for going to a movie - the popcorn!! I just had surgery, and my parents are here to look after my son. I thought me and my husband could go out to a movie - but it would be like torture, me sitting there smelling all that popcorn and not being able to have it!! So we didn't go.

After reading about the guy who died from cancer caused by microwave popcorn, it sounds even less appealing to me...

not trying to be difficult or anything, but i would love to see how they ever were able to prove that his cancer was caused by microwave popcorn. i'm sure it may have been theorized, but, that seems like an awful far fetched assumption. do you have details, or perhaps a site that i can go to read about it...i am interested.

-by the way, i know that this is a self-deprecating way to think, but everything causes cancer...right down to the alluminum in our deoderant. i truly believe this.

..by the way, my doctor really leaves it up to us, but he strongly discourages it.

my family eates popcorn almost every night. i finally ate some last night. i had no problem getting it down, but after the second handful i wasn't interested in eating anymore.

i was curious about his theory because my son is 6 and has already had to undergo minor colon surgery which did not correct his problem. i'm trying to wean him off of the popcorn now as i would hate to know that i was contributing to his problem.

I've never been a big fan of popcorn, the home microwave popcorn isn't good enough to me.. it's alright, but I LOVE movie theatre popcorn. Since banding, we've gone to the movies twice and I get a small bag (for myself mwhaha) instead of the big tub. But I don't eat it at home.. it's too much work (picking all the kernels out afterward) for something that is only so-so.

I too think the popcorn is half the movie experience!!

I have cut down on the amount of popcorn I eat, as well as the amount of everything I eat---but I do still eat it.

If a person ate nothing but microwave popcorn with all the additives, and perservatives, I can see where it would not be a healthy lifestyle. But in small amounts scattered around in a normal diet, I can't imagine it causing me to die of cancer. As has been pointed out, everything we do is leading to us dying! Every breath we take!

Now I do not especially want to rush that along! So attempt to make more healthy choices than not. But still have some popcorn now and then!! I do go with the o trans fats, small bags, the popcorn itself is a whole grain---does that gain it any points?!

My band Dr. never warned against it, and it is not on my list of foods to exercise extreme caution with.

I just know I could never work in a movie theater with the smell of that buttery popcorn all the time------mmmmm

I've never been a big popcorn eater, it's just been something that I have a little bit of once in a while. There was one time as a teenager that I had a few kernals become imbeded under my gum line and I had to have a dentist cut it out :omg: I really haven't had the desire to eat popcorn since.

Lucy, what's this about a guy dying from microwave popcorn? Can you give me the details, please?

Linda

It was from inhaling the fumes of the popcorn, not from eating it. He was making about 3 bags of popcorn a day, which is rather excessive. And I don't think he's died yet. Here's an article about the dangers of inhaling the fumes of the additives in popcorn.

Just to clarify, the additive in microwave popcorn does not cause cancer; it causes lung disease. Here's the story of the man in Colorado who developed lung disease from inhaling the fumes for 10 years. His condition has been improving since he stopped cooking popcorn in the microwave every day. Lung disease, cancer, neither are a very good option. I'm sure you if you google microwave popcorn and lung disease or cancer you will find what I am talking about. No, it's not the popcorn that caused the problem, it was the bag. And, sure, everything causes cancer and I could walk outside and get hit by a bus tomorrow and die, but if I can choose to avoid problems in my life I will. I mean, that's the main reason why I got this band in the first place.

wow, well, i think i will go back to the traditional route of popping my popcorn. or i will just use orville redenb..as they have stopped using the chemical.

lucy, you are correct, if you know something harms you, then why continue to do it, well, i knew that being fat harms me, but for some reason i was unable to stop eating foods that i knew were bad for me. oh the psychology!!!

i try to cut things, and i will cut down on microwave popcorn now that i have read that article, but there are so many things, chlorine in the Water, gamma rays, etc. i want to be one of those people that can move out in the middle of nowhere and live from the vegetables in my garden and the cow in my pasture, but i can't. i am not a believer in free will myself, our choices are limited.

i will cut where i can, and i will cut this..

I heard about the lung disease thing on the radio a week or so ago.

They said the fumes from popping popcorn in the microwave may cause lung disease.

How many foods have we gone back and forth with these things? Remember egg beaters was bad, then good, then bad, then good. Sweet-n-low was bad, then good, then bad, then good.

Etc.

I'm so glad someone asked about popcorn. I have been wanting some but was not sure if it would be a good idea or not. I am not on "real" food yet so I won't be trying it for a few weeks, but I sure would love some every now and again.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
