Secret sleevers?

Recommended Posts

I've kept my surgery very private. Nothing on social media at all. I debated not telling my parents, but ended up doing so since they would figure out something was up next time they saw me eat when I visited. Only my closest friends and family members know. It's not that I'm keeping it a secret necessarily, I just don't like sharing details about my health with people. I do admire the more extroverted among us who are sharing their journeys though, and I enjoy reading about people's experiences.

Same for me. Even waiters feel the need to comment on how little I'm eating. :/

I've already warned my spouse: I'm probably not going to want to go out to eat for at least 6 months, maybe longer. Eating such small amounts, while in a visibly fat body... yeah, I'm not interested in people's commentary.

My BF and I share meals often and this helps especially if you can do the dividing up of meals.

What if when you order your meal you immediately ask for a "to go plate" as well? I order my food and I literally do not take a breath when I say "and may I have a to go plate with that order please". They look awfully confused and sometimes will ask, "you want a to go plate now?" I smile and respond, "Yes, please, when you bring my meal, please bring a to go plate along with it. <Insert smile and batting eyelashes>" It does a couple of things, it trains me on Portion Control, but it also trains those around me so that they won't think anything of me eating a little or sometimes not eating at all when they are eating, but instead having a Protein Drink (which I have done in several meetings and gatherings), so after this surgery next month they will probably just think, "she is just going to far with this "dieting" stuff :-)". Now, I do know that the portions change even more DRASTICALLY after surgery, so we'll probably only go to dinner with my best friend and her family! HAHAHA!!!! When we HAVE to go with others, I'll probably just order a cup of Soup or something.

That's a great idea! I like it.

I'm super glad that works for you (sincerely! that's great!), but it isn't an option for me, either right now or in the period immediately after surgery. It does the opposite of what I want, by calling more attention to how much I'm eating, not less. I may be bold enough to do that when I inhabit a thin body, but I definitely won't do it now.

(This is my own hangup, and it's probably more of a thing for therapy than a thing we can problem solve on a discussion board. I'm all right with that, though I do really appreciate your sharing what works for you! My spouse and I are both cool with not going to restaurants for 6-8 months. And if we get pulled in by friends before then, I can probably get him on board with @MargoCL's approach, especially since we're into Indian food and sushi, which both lend themselves pretty well to sharing.)

This is sneaky and deceptive but... You could always say the food was terrible, so you couldn't eat it, or you recently developed IBS, or say nothing looks good so you'll just order soup/salad/coffee/tea...

Or the other end is say something's so great you *force* everyone to try it and oops look at that, not much left on your plate...(what I do)

When out with my family in large groups they like to play "now everyone pass your plate to the left" so much fun!

No cares if I eat a ton, more for everyone else to try

It gets easier, eventually

And if the conversation is engaging no one cares what you're eating...

First of all, I want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for your helpful and thoughtful responses. You guys continue to give me strength and courage through sharing your experience.

Second, and please take this with a grain of salt since I haven't actually been sleeved yet -- I'll just add that I am in AA and haven't had a drink in nearly 13 years. One of the most common insecurities felt by those new in recovery when going out is that people will see they're not drinking and ask them why and give them crap about it. This does happen sometimes, but usually people are just so happy with their own cocktail that they don't really care what the other person is or isn't drinking. So with food, I am hoping it is similar -- especially when I go out with my husband we we share Entrees. :)

@CrankyMagpie, no worries, trust me, I totally understand. Please take note of my last three or four lines though. I am under no disillusion. I am sure it probably works for me now because I am pre-surgery. I may and probably will feel differently post surgery and I've accounted for my feelings changing by saying okay, we may only go out with my best friend and her family (as she knows about it and knows two or three bites and I'll probably be full). Or if we have to go to dinner with other people (because for us there is no way around it sometimes), it's probably a cup of Soup for me. So, I definitely understand and can empathize. We are all different though and I enjoy reading everyone's journey and learning as I travel my own, so, thank you for sharing! I wish you all the best. Keep us updated!

My strategy depends on the restaurant and who I'm with.

If it's just DH and I, we might get one of the larger (combo-type) meals and share. We're talking something with 2 or 3 different entrée items only in smaller portions. Sometimes the restaurant will separate it into separate plates as a courtesy, but I'm just happy with my side plate. I pick items and amounts that I want and hubby eats the rest. If he can't, then we take it to-go. I have also got just one item from the a la carte menu. I've looked at the children's menu, but honestly, most of those are things I wouldn't eat.

If I'm with co-workers, I try to select smaller meals and sometimes even order an appetizer if I can find one that is a healthier option. If not, it's the a la carte method or Soup.

My biggest issue with eating out is the water/drinks. Every darn restaurant wants to offer you drinks and when you tell them no, you get the expression that says "is this woman nuts". If I know I have a reasonable wait until the meal is served, I will get Water or tea, but then they're constantly trying to re-fill something I won't be drinking.

I have never asked for the to-go box before my meal, but have strongly considered bringing my own gladware in my purse because those flimsy Styrofoam ones are a pain.

Note that I said "considered". I haven't actually done it, but the thought has crossed my mind more than once.

Last weekend, went out with my son and had white chicken chili. This restaurant has THE BEST and I went out of my way to get it. It's thick with lots of chicken, but even a cup size was too much. So, I got one of those Styrofoam cups with a lid. It exploded on me and in my purse. Now my wallet has a crust of white chicken chili.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
