Too much protein/Kidney stones

Recommended Posts

So last week I had a kidney stone. Worst pain I've ever felt in my life. Much worse than any surgery I've had. Anyway, I know that lack of fluids can be a cause but also too much Protein can cause it too. Does anyone know what amount of protein is too much? I know right now I'm not eating enough protein but I'm a little nervous about eating too much protein cause I really don't want any more kidney stones. Eating is a struggle anyway cause I don't get hungry. I make myself eat and I'm still figuring out what I can tolerate. I'm 2 months post of vsg. Thanks!

First of all, sorry you had to go through that; I've heard that kidney stones are terrible. How much too much Protein is will vary from person to person. My doctor recommended that I get at least 80g per day, but I do around 100g per day with no issues.

are you getting enough Calcium? According to this article, this could be another contributing factor.

I take 1500mg daily of calcium citrate soft chews. I spread this out a minimum of 2 hours a part, usually with food, and always 3 hours prior to taking my Multivitamin with Iron.

I am a nurse, and I have heard urologists say to drink lemon juice in your Water to help prevent renal stones.♡

I don't know what's considered too much Protein, but I've been getting 200 to 250 g a day. 100g doesn't seem extreme by any measure

I actually just met with my bariatric nutrition today about this. She said that as you start to get above 100 grams of Protein per day, that it is actually more about the ratio or percentage of protein in your diet versus the actual number of grams. For example she was telling me that my protein should be no more than 40% of my daily calories after I get above 100 grams per day. Otherwise, your body will have trouble breaking down the protein?

How is this even possible?! I’m lucky to get 50g a day. What are you eating and how often???

2 shakes should get you to or above 50 grams of Protein alone.

I mean I'm 9 months out. But my Breakfast is a Protein mugcake which basically is 50g of protein. Then I have 2 Protein Bars at work, another 50g.

A small meal after work another 25-30g. (eggs, meat, something like that) dinner is basically lean meat 40 to 50g of protein, and before bed is a Protein Shake which is another 40 to 50g.

Effectively I eat every 2 to 3 hours. Getting at least 20g of protein at each meal, with a few big meals being closer to 50g.

If I was heavier I'd be concerned I'm eating so much, but since I'm legit borderline wasting away and trying to pack on muscle, I'm alright with how much I'm eating.

As long as I can keep up the hardcore lifting routine and pack on muscle

I don't think there is a set number that is to much. I think it varies from person to person. Do you have a dietician/nutritionist that you could call to ask. My dietician has me on a minimum of 95g of protein per day but has also told me if I get more in that's great. So I usually average between 95g- 110g.

Good for you! I’m only 10 weeks out and I can only eat three tablespoons of food :( I can’t imagine eating that much but one day I’ll be able to again!

Milk it while you can

It's the golden window to get to levels of leanness you only imagined

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
