Pre-op diet question. Please help!

Recommended Posts

I have to do 4 weeks of pre-op. I had to buy the food from my surgeons office. It is DISGUSTING! It’s literally packets of food and you add Water to them.

Listen I can do any diet for the most part bc I’ve done them before.. but this watered down nasty food is making feel starved, angry and emotional.... this is only day 2.

I don’t want to hear that I’m mentally not ready for surgery bc I am. But I’ve heard of other people having different diets.

Is anyone allowed to have premiere Protein Shakes? ?? What other diets do your doctors have you on to shrink your liver???

Ok... first and foremost if you are having an issue with your prescribed pre-op diet, the **ONLY** people that are going to be able to give you answers or approve adjustments are the people that are in control of your surgery. Yes, everyone seems to have different diets both pre and post-op. But no one here on this forum is going to cancel your surgery because you didn't follow some instructions. Your surgeon however, can.

So if your pre-op diet is giving you issues, then talk to them and ask if they can make changes. If you make your own changes, and your doctor isn't aware of them... there is a chance that your doctor postpones or cancels your surgery because you didn't follow their guidelines.

You say you are mentally ready for this surgery. Well, part of this whole process is dealing with felling "starved, angry, emotional" at least until your body sorts stuff out. The pre-op sucks. But you REALLY REALLY REALLY need to follow your doctors instructions and no one else's. How horrible would you feel if you took someone's advice here, followed a different diet than what was approved and then you had some complication or had your surgery canned because of it? Not worth the risk. Talk to your doctors, let them know you are having issues with the food and let them give you different options.

Maybe I am a lucky BARI-BABE, O.S.U. let's me set the length of my prediet. And I have a choice of 2 weeks,3 weeks or 4 weeks. They mandate at least 2, recommend 4 weeks, their reasoning; with 4 weeks surgery is easier and,his heal better. At this point I am leaning toward 4 weeks and starting it August 1st. My gut feelling(pun or no pun) is. that at my age, and yes although I claim to be as strong as you 20 year old bari-babes and bari-dudes there may be an inherent fraility that maybe I should take into account. Yeah this old chassis and engine can still pull a pretty good load but I'm scarely show-room fresh and I don't know how firmly my trailer hitch is welded on, what if something popped?
Basically it is 4 high Protein Shakes, 2 fruit Snacks must be apple, orange or banana, one meal 300 calorie meal like Smart Choice,Lean Cuisine, Atkins or homemade if comparable, no starchy vegetables, no peas no corn and of course no potatoes, no breads rice or similar (so no quinoa?) and all the Water, unsweeted drinks, no caffeine, my little ❤, my kidneys, and tummy can stand.
So I'd like some bai-advice myself! Sorry Kella I know you were OP but I'm being a tad pushy goes with my red hair. Do you veterans of the Prediet Purgatory think I am wise doing the 4 weeks or will I founder before the end of August and first of September? My stubborn will keeps chanting 4,4,4, but I haven't interviewed my mentality or,emorions, after untold it to shut up, we don't need sweets and although Tomkitten has a bag. of Lays potato chips, they are his and my little hand can't sneak in there. So my emotions are sulking, and may not be speaking to me!
So I warned Tomkitten I will be hangry, nasty and maybe no fun to be around. And he maybe should get out his football helmet
and my shin-guards from when I played catcher because I could be throwing and kicking at things before this is over.
But this is an important undertaking and one I elected to do. As the late Bette Davis said "Hold on, this is going to be a BUMPY RIDE!"😝🚙😝

@Matt Z I planned on discussing it with my surgeon but I do want to hear what other diets people are on out there. I’m self paying for surgery... there is no doubt in my mind this was another thing to add on to the bill.

When I said angry, emotional and feel starved... what female do you know that is not a pure asshole when they are hungry? Lol I was looking for support here from others whom have these emotions as well.

@frustr8 I know I’m not one of the veterans on this one but I do think my surgeon could have prepared me more for what the pre-op diet was going to be. I cold turkey have had to start on their diet with no mental preparation. If I were you I would ease into it at the 4week mark or even now. That way you have at least have an idea of how your body is going to feel and adjust some.

On my preop diet I had to do 8 days of 5 Premier Protein shakes per day. I was allowed to have broth, sugar free popsicles, and sugar free Jello also. It was SOOO hard. I was hungry constantly. I’m so thankful mine was only a week long. I too thought, why can’t I just eat 800 calories a day of Protein and veg? I still don’t know why my diet HAD to be Protein Shakes only. I didn’t question it. But definitely talk to your team and ask if there is something else you can do. Come to the table with a few ideas to throw their way. Maybe you and your dietitian can come up with something more tolerable.

And now you are assuming because I'm male I don't have emotions? That I wasn't scared as hell going into things? that I didn't have some crazy depression because the rest of my family can eat all the foods I wish I could? That's I'm not effected by hunger? Seriously. The emotions you speak of... are not specific to one sex.

I don't know of anyone that was given a pre-op diet that was informed as to how hard it would be... They didn't tell us before my lap-band back in 2011... they didn't tell use this time around when I was revised from Band to Bypass.

I'm going bow out of this... I provided you with sound advice. It's up to you want you want to do with it.

Good luck.

@ Matt Z actually no I didn’t say any of those things. I think you more harsh than supportive in your first comment... and well now your second comment. Bc it’s the internet.. it’s easy to take things out of context.

I wrote on here to get support as people said.. this is a place for support. I also wrote on here out of curiosity as to what other pre-op diets others are on. Not once did I say I was not going to follow my surgeons instructions.

If part of the whole process is dealing with the emotions of it and I don’t have anyone around me going through it, then wouldn’t be smart to reach out to others that are? All you have done is discouraged me from getting on any of these forums at all. I didn’t disrespect you in any way nor did I twist anything you said.

Good luck to you!

@chunckysoup thank you for your response! I did give them a call today but I guess with it being Friday the dietitian wasn’t in. I actually looove the Premier Protein shakes, I’m hoping they say I can change it up and have those.

I think this take is a bit extreme.

Many of us, including myself, had no pre op diet. So it certainly isn't a necessity. I'm not saying go against Dr.'s orders, but this isn't something universally agreed upon by Bariatric surgeons like "protein first". Also the OP's description of being forced to buy dehydrated food isn't the norm, and sounds worse than the normal pre op diet.

I have never felt "starved, angry, emotional", at all. Well only emotional when I'm losing my hair by the handful maybe. This isn't some kind of torturous process, for me at least. I have never lost weight so easily before in my life.

I'm curious, what kind of food, can you show us?

But in the end you have to learn to consult your team for changes not this site, or you'll be here after surgery looking for alternatives to your plan, meds, etc. Instead of going where you should...

If you are going to trust your team with your life, trust them.

My surgery is July 23rd, which is in 2 days!! My Pre Op diet for 7 days was :

1 Premier shake for Breakfast and lunch.

1 dinner meal. 4-6 ozs of lean meat, not fried, steamed or raw veggies. Broccoli, brussel sprouts, green Beans.

Last 3 days is 3 Protein Shakes.

I am also able to have chicken broth, sf Jello, and sf popsicles. That's it. Water or add Crystal Light packet.

I am barely making it 10 days! I don't think I would last 4 weeks!! Power to you!

I agree on the fact that you need to talk to your Surgeon or their Assistant in helping you revise your Pre Op diet!! It is so crucial!!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
