When were you able to eat a salad? I’m about 7 week post op and I’ve lost 31 pounds (yay) so far but since I’m always on the go I feel like eating a salad when I’m out and about and can’t manage to meal prep would be helpful. Let me know your experiences and when you started eating it.

What does your surgical team say?

My surgerical team said I can eat veggies except lettuce for now but they said cooked. But I’m wondering about other ones because I don’t get to see them for another 3 months and it’s very hard to reach them on the phone since it’s a hospital in nyc.

I understand that it's a pain in the a$$ but they are your best bet for when you can advance your diet. Asking here is a good stop-gap measure when you are looking for information, but remember, every case is different. Your team knows your history and can give advice accordingly.

Cooked veggies and fruits are less likely to get caught on scar tissue within your digestive system. Small bowel obstructions are not fun (I've had 13 of them since 1995, two requiring surgery to clear). It's not worth the trouble.

Don't get me wrong, please - I'm not saying to not ask questions here and look to others for advice. But, speaking from experience, other than me, my doctor and surgeon know me best. I trust them and listen to them.

and lettuce is terrible cooked... I've tried (because of my other surgeries, I am not supposed to eat any veggies or fruit raw, nor can I eat any nuts, ever (too much scar tissue in my small intestines) - I truly miss romaine lettuce salads)

I started at 6 months post op , which was on plan with my surgical group, and even now I don't actually eat much of the lettuce, despite the kind I get. I still stick to the Protein source first.

I just want to clarify that I’m not talking about just a salad made with lettuce. I mean an arugula salad or a spinach salad. I don’t want to eat lettuce I understand that my surgeon team said no to that.

I meant which ever leaf you chose for the salad, the problem is that they are generally bulking items now, which is good down the road, but I think your team will know best on why they don't want you to have it raw, ask them about wilted and see if that will make a difference.

I was cleared for everything at 6 weeks. I've eaten all kinds of types of salads ever since without problem.

I ate salad with about every kind of veggie...at about 8 weeks. No problems.

I was cleared at six weeks as well. I don’t eat as much of the greens as before but I enjoy salads still.

I am a RNY patient though, so not sure if that makes a difference.

I love eating the salads at Panera if I’m out and about!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
