Hello all,

I am just curious on coffee intakes. I have yet to have any coffee but I miss it so much. Before surgery I would have about three cups a day. I went completely cold turkey in February before my surgery. I know I am not supposed to have it, but I can’t see myself living without it. My favorite was a venti iced caramel mochiatto with extra caramel drizzle. Java chip frap, or mocha frap. I know that’s about 800+ calories each and lord knows way more sugar than allowed so I’m trying to find healthier alternatives.

I am just wondering how long did it take you before trying to have coffee post-op? What are some of your favorite go to coffee drinks today that don’t have high sugar content? Any suggestions would help a ton. 😬

I waited 6 months, my plan said I only needed to wait 2 months. I just didn’t really want it at that point. Now I just stick to basic coffee with one sugar. But I let myself have one mocha with skim (220 calories) once a month. I just say pay attention to what all is in your coffee (I wouldn’t do the fancy 800 calories coffees) and but I see no issues with a basic coffee once far enough out from surgery!

I started drinking Decaf right after surgery. I actually noticed a lot of benefits from being off of the caffeine so I generally stick to decaf and only have the fully loaded version on really bad days. I have it in a variety of ways - most commonly with sugar free Creamer. One thing I did a lot early on was mix it with my Protein. I would do coffee, protein shake/powder, ice and a little milk and then shake it all up or blend it to make it more like a frap. I mixed and matched the flavors of protein to make different combinations but my favorite was chocolate or caramel. I do plain decaf lattes occasionally too - mainly if my tummy is feeling extra cranky (hot drinks are better for me than cold).

In my experience, you can have coffee as soon as your stomach tolerates it. If I recall, that was a week or two after surgery for me. Have a sip, wait, see how it goes. If it feels good, have another sip, wait, see how it goes. If at any point it hurts, stop.

Your coffee has 800 calories? My cup of black coffee has 5 calories. Choose well!

I have always drunk my coffee black. I drink about 32 ounces of coffee a day. That's to stay functioning. On my post-surgical tray with broth and Jello was coffee. Not Decaf. Leaded. My team and I had discussed it at length. If I feel the need to have a sweet coffee drink, I go with a sugar free, nonfat vanilla latte - iced or skim. Basically, your only calories there are the skim milk (which is 10 or 16 ounces, roughly depending on iced or hot.)

I'm almost 2 years out (23 months) and I pretty much eat and drink what I want, but inadvertently was given a full sugar full fat vanilla latte recently and had dumping issues because I can't handle that amount of sugar.

I do 1 8-12 oz coffee a day, in the morning. No sugar, no sweetener outside of some sugar free non-dairy creamer and a splash of fat free milk to for the caffeine to bind to so it doesn't impact my Calcium intake.

I've seen a few people on here drink coffee with Premier Protein Caramel, which I think would be a good way to replicate your iced caramel macchiato. Or coffee with Farlife milk, and sugar free Syrup, caramel or vanilla. Both would be good ways to get Protein with few calories, and get that sweet coffee fix.

I’m kissing my coffee three days post op. Sipping on Decaf peppermint tea right now and tolerating it well.

I started to drink coffee again about a month after my surgery. I drink my coffee black though so the calories weren’t a concern for me. My main thing was waiting long enough to make sure I was getting my Water intake down before trying to add the coffee back into my routine.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
