When Did You Stop Crushing Pills?

Recommended Posts

Just curious when everyone was able to swallow pills/vitamins whole again. Still a crushin' over here and I'm so tired of it. Lol

Wow ... I started taking small pills at 2 weeks post op. Then I started taking all pills, including large supplements at 4 weeks post op.

I never crushed or cut in half any of my pills. I took my horse pills whole, even from day one post-op. I was never told otherwise and I didn't feel anything unusual. That said, I wouldn't recommend this. I suppose I was lucky. I'd prefer not to rely on luck, however. Had I experienced a complication, it would have been all on me.

My program allows small pills and capsules right away so I never crushed anything. I did chewables for my Vitamins and Calcium so I didn't have anything that was larger right at first. I was able to take bigger pills around 8-12 weeks out.

I stopped crushing at 2 months. I tried to swallow a horse size centrical and it worked so that is when I stopped.

After a week at home. I could NOT take it anymore. My surgeon approved it as well.

I was told I could swallow pills day after surgery. Even a capsule. No problems whatsoever.

Started taking my meds the 2nd day after surgery when I first got home, full pill not cutting or crushing. I used to take all pills at once pre op but do two at a time now because of the amount of liquid I can consume. No problems at all. I was told we were allowed to swallow anything the size or smaller than our pinkie nail bed. If bigger cut in half. Good Luck with it.

Super interesting. My nurses told me they want me to crush pills forever, but honestly it makes me not want to take my pills.

Those of you swallowing your pills, have you had blood levels checked? Are you absorbing what you need to from the pills?

I'm sleeved, so no absorption issues.

My doctor gave me.Some ODT meds which made me throw up, so I just swallowed all my pills whole, my surgeon said it was ok.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
