How do i get enough protein in my diet when I can only eat a few bites

Recommended Posts

Basically, Protein Drinks until you can get enough from real food - which can be quite variable, a few weeks to a few months.

I agree, Protein drinks. I also cannot get all my protein from food, unless I were to basically eat all day, which I obviously don't want to do.

Edit to add: Greek yogurt, protein fortified Soups from here on Bariatric Pal, Fairlife milk and Jerky, could get me to my protein goals if I really worked at it. I find it easier though if I just start my day with a Protein Shake. That get me over half way there, so the rest of the day I can usually get there easily.

This depends on your level of restriction. 5 months out, I usually can't get 2 oz of solid Protein in. So I'd have to eat 2 oz of chicken, 6x's a day, to get to 60 g of protein. Clearly that's not practical, or desirable. So I foresee needing protein drinks for a long time to come.

I went on Amazon and bought a 12 pack of Pure Protein drinks. They have 35 grams of protein per can. They are chocolate flavored.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
