I'm getting ready to have the sleeve. I'm told hair loss will occur. Is there anything to ensure it doesn't all fall out???

Hopefully the veterans will weigh in, but I'm 3 months out and my hair is starting to fall out (slightly). EVERYONE has their remedy, but I believe if you keep up on your protein, like keep your numbers high it's not so bad. They've done research on biotin, no significant difference, keep up with your regular vitamins and routines and eventually it evens out and grows back. Some people use nioxin shampoos, I personally don't like it, I like Monat, it's natural but more expensive. I've heard people wearing wigs (extreme) I've dealt with hair loss before so I just trim it into a cute cut, it's just hair afterall.

Take your vitamins and condition Hair. Drink plenty of water and you should be fine

I have kept up my protein, water, supplements, and I'm in the middle of some pretty extreme hair loss right now at 4 1/2 months. So I'm not sure what else I could have done to prevent it.

I'm not a vet by any means, but I am 5 months post op and my hair is significantly falling out. I have done everything, and anything to prevent it. I take 10k units of biotin. I avoided coloring my hair for almost a year and a half to ensure healthy hair. I use salon quality shampoo and conditioner. I meet or exceed my protein goals every day. The point is, that I don't believe there is one true way to avoid hair loss. I'm thankful that I have very thick hair. Some experience a little, some a lot. One thing I know for sure is that it does slow down, and usually grows back.

Also, here's the more scientific explanation to why we shed, and when....hair loss comes during the next natural shedding cycle. Everyone sheds at the end of the “telogen” phase, which is approximately every 3-4 months. It depends on when your surgery is with correlation to your next telogen phase, as to when you will experience hair loss.

Unfortunately it's the luck of the draw with telogen effluvium , some experience it, some do not. The rate of loss per person will vary on a number of things , general health, type of surgery, genetics, protein intake, prayer, hair type, iron levels, sci-fi preference, etc.
Do your research, visit a dermatologist and do what you are comfortable doing (and spending) for a remedy. But I will suggest LLysine as something to look into...

My doctor has zinc as the recommended supplement to prevent hair loss

8 months out. Hair still falls out, a lot less at least. Months 4-6 were the worst. Thankfully I had pretty thick hair and it's not terribly noticeable. But hoping it stops soon

I’m 6 months out and so far so good with zero hair loss. I have been extremely lucky in being able to drink a lot of water from the start, maybe that helped??

I keep up my protein and vitamins as well, but haven’t done anything special. I suspect it’s genetics at play.

I did purchase a wig just in case, will leave it another 6 months and will resell it if I don’t end up needing it.

I am a natural red-head, we have the fewest hairs per square inch in the first place, Daddy had thin hair, my Tomkitten in his 30s has thin hair, I cannot escape heredity, can I? I fear I will look like a dog with mange, well I wear my hair short, maybe LOL nobody will notice?? At least I may be arranging what remains with a washcloth, Better thin hair, thin body instead of thick hair, thick body, and can't hardly move on my own!

When I had sleeve done in 2012 I never has hair loss and now with the rny I've only had thinning

I have to say I had horrible hair thinning but to be fair I wasn’t taking my vitamins like I was supposed to. When I got serious and started taking them like I was supposed to my hair returned so make sure to keep up on your proteins and vitamins!

I also am having bad hair loss and have been keeping up on everything. My labs came back all normal except a little low on vitamin D which I was expecting. I just want it to stop now. [emoji19]

Good news is, the losses slowed down/stopped around month 5 or so. Now at nearly 1 year post op it's all growing back. My hair looks a bit insane at the moment, but hopefully it will grow out of the chicken hair phase quickly!

No hair loss at almost 5 months! You don't want the way I escaped it though, be on Total Parentral Nutrition for over 2 months, yeah my proteins , vitamins and other goodies taken care of but for 12 hours every evening and night I have my backpack of goodies, a plastic line thethering me, and to me the WORST part, it's 3 liters of fluid. like a 3 month old infant I sleep, cry and pee are all night. Too much pride to drag out the bedside commode, so I repeatedly,pitty-pat,from room to room like an unqiuet spirit. All b I need is a chain to rattle like Marley's ghost. Oh the cats appreciate me being awake, but they get a chance to sleep through the day. ???
