Recommended Posts

What type of coffee do you buy (brand wise) and how do you prepare it. If it’s hot or cold? Do you use a straw?
And how long After your sleeve did you start drinking coffee and how many times a week? How many ounces of coffee do you have?


I know a lot of questions about coffee but I’m wondering.

I drank only Decaf for the first couple of months after surgery.

These days I drink a about 12 ounces of regular a day, and sometimes another 8 ounces of decaf. Otherwise I drink ginger lemon tea, Mio in Water, constant comments on ice, cucumber or raspberries in water, and a little kombucha here and there.

I started Decaf at 9 days post-op I believe, with pureed food. Before everyone freaks out, this is what my program recommends. We were told that we can switch to regular coffee if we tolerate it well. I have one cup every morning, like I used to do - but honnestly I usually drink half. I never drank coffee with a straw so I still don't but I sip my Water through a bottle with a straw and it works just fine.

I was required to take a nutrition class before surgery. And my program allows coffee on the full liquid and clear liquid diet, of course no sugar but to limit it to 2 cups a day. I looked at many YouTube videos and some suggested to add the caramel Premier Protein to it. It tastes like a caramel mochiatto and I love it.

I had coffee in the hospital post op. Now I'm 5 weeks post op, I drink coffee and espresso daily. Hot cold dosent matter. Usually black sometimes I enjoy a dollop of whipped cream or steamed foam in my espresso. The whipped cream is around 10 cal and the foam 5.

In my iced coffee I go black with some splenda or sugar free Syrup. I've started doing Iced coffee with no sugar vanilla blended. I get weird looks but its a 0 cal frap.

Ive been using straws since being in the hosp post op.

Never had an issue.

Wow! You guys are lucky. I had to give up coffee completely and I’m still preop. I was told the coffee has acid which is not good for the breakdown of the food in your new stomach. I am not allowed to have any until after two months postop! Boy the headaches killed the first few days I gave coffee up!! I’m not allowed any caffeine. So weird how different surgeons have different rules.

White Castle, Dunkin Donut, Chok full of Nuts, Maxwell House French Roast or Columbian, last result Folgers , it and Starbucks most expensive. That said, I have,gastritis and a baby ulcer and have to give it up pre'surg too.🍵💦

No coffee for me either, Decaf is allowed, but I don't like it. The headaches were real pre-op and I am counting the days when when I am allowed to add it back. Even when I am allowed it is supposed to be low acid coffee, I am not even sure what that is. I just want my morning caffeine in a cup of hot black coffee. Another reason my surgeon does not allow it is dehydration concerns.

I'm not supposed to have it either, though I think it's BS. They've disproved a lot of the myths about coffee over and over again. That's one thing I will be bringing up with my surgeon at my follow-up. I can see not drinking it prior to surgery and during the initial healing stages (MILD diuretic and acidic) but not on a long-term basis. The latest literature doesn't support needing to give up coffee.

He’s why so many surgeons have different “rules”- a lot of docs infuse their opinions into their treatment as opposed to staying evidence based. Or they rely on older literature. I am an organ transplant coordinator and see this in critical care all all of the time.

Caffeine is a mild diuretic. However the research shows that you absorb more liquid from the Water in the coffee than you urinate out. So yes. Water is better for hydration. However no amount of coffee will dehydrate you. It’s not possible.

I never drank coffee before but around 6 months after surgery I started craving it

I mix cold brew coffee concentrate with Premier Protein

Or I mix premier Protein with Syntrax matrix lattes (which have coffee as it's second main ingredient.)

Low Acid coffee is cold brew. You can make it yourself or buy it at the grocery store. My local "Grocery Outlet" has a liter for 99 cents and it tastes pretty good. You can warm it up again and is so smooth. total difference but still good.

During the week I make cold brew at home and drink that, made with Trader Joe’s coffee. 180 ml of coffee mixed with 360 ml of 1% milk. On the weekends I might have a grande 1% latte from Starbucks.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
