Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion

Recommended Posts

My program says the same about canned or cooked fruits but oddly enough banana is on my list of approved foods and is also on the example meal list (1/4 medium banana). Way to contradict your own program. I have used 1/4 banana twice in my Protein Shakes but I don't find it worth it. The sugars and carbs that it adds when I'm almost struggling to get my Protein in because my belly is so full all day due to soft foods and the low amount of protein I get from them because of the small amount I can eat.

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to check in. First off, I am 8 days post op and I am 15 pounds down! My highest weight was 298 and I am at 239 today. I’m so excited. Everything seems to be going fine except for the occasional diarrhea. My doc said it’s fine and I see her on Tuesday for my follow-up.
I do have a question. I really do not feel hungry. Every once in a while I will get a gripey hungry feeling when my stomach is empty I remember the doc saying that the hunger hormone would be reduced after surgery but, I honestly thought I would be starving. Does anyone else feel this way? And does that raging hunger ever come back? (I hope not!) I just feel like I need a timer to remind myself to eat.

I use a timer all day everyday! To remind me when to eat (sip), when to stop, how long to wait, then when to sip. When the timer goes off I change course and set it for the next thing. I couldn't meet my goals with out it. I use the timer on my phone.

I’m excited bc my surgeon is adding strained Soup to what I’m allowed to eat today (only like 3-4 tsp at a time). BUT I’m also officially not going to see any real food until 9/3. Puréed (including yogurt and cottage cheese and stuff like that) starts 8/20. Ughhhh.

When I was on phase 2 full liquids I was allowed Soups. My wife picked up a tortilla Soup that was soooo good. I didn't have to strain it just had to blend so I would add a scoop of unflavored Protein Powder blend it and go to town. It lasted me 4 days and was my favorite meal of the day. I was also allowed yogurt so I would take a table spoon of greek yogurt and blend it with Protein2O and sometimes a scoop of vanilla Protein powder. Really good, the tart from the yogurt was knocked down a bit from the sweet of the protein Water and the sweet of the protein water was knocked down a bit from the tart of the yogurt.

Tortilla Soup sounds really good. I have been eating cream of chicken and cream of broccoli soup.

I have a question, I’m on full liquids, can I blend up Soup as long as it’s a still liquid or do i have to wait till the purée phase?

I was told I needed to strain mine, so I’m doing Tomato Soup and creamed Soups and then straining it to catch any chunks...

But can i blend then strain? To make it creamy ,since it’s a broth base to start
I’m just curious, I’ve been having cream of chicken, and vegan Protein broth so far

The only Soup I had was tortilla soup and I blended it. I only took what liquid I would eat a small amount of the solid ingredients and I added Water. If it was watered down too much I would add onion and garlic powder for xtra flavor. Pretty watery end result, no thicker than the watery yogurt I was eating/drinking.

Double check with your NUT to be sure though. I didn't ask but I had no issues either.

J San what was in the tortilla Soup? That sounds so good.

I've tried finding it online to add a picture but it doesn't come up. The brand is Campbell's Homestyle Healthy Request Soup - Santa Fe Style. Similar to this one I found that they sell at Walmart but there was no meat in the one I had, https://www.walmart.com/ip/Campbell-s-Homestyle-Healthy-Request-Mexican-Style-Chicken-Tortilla-Soup-18-6-oz/10308005

I even searched the store I got it from (ShopRite) here in NJ and it didn't come up with any of the different types?????? I'll put it on the shopping list this week and hopefully find it in the store when we go Saturday. I'm wondering if I missed part of the name. I tried scanning into MY Fitness Pal and it was not in the data base so I had to add the nutritional information manually. BTW it may not have been tortilla but it was still a wonderful upgrade after all that bland broth.

..........Still can't find it online but what I put down in the nutritional information which came off the back of the can is Brand: Cambell's Description: Santa Fe Vegetable Soup

I only lost weight my first week... I’ve been stuck on 116ish kg since then (I’ll be finishing my third week soon). Yesterday I went to the Water park for some exercise and fun. Didn’t last long though, I got extremely fatigued after about 2 hours. I’m on pureed now and each time I eat my tummy gurgles. Sometimes I even feel a sharp pang when I eat. Also a loooooot gas whenever I eat. That’s my update so far.

How far out are you? My surgeon didn’t allow me to take Vitamins until the 3 week mark. He said they tend to make you feel not so good if you take them early on post op

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
