The one thing you could not live without post surgery

This makes me giggle because I watched The Great British Baking Show obsessively after my surgery on my 3 week leave. I hate baking shows typically but that’s all I could watch! And now I hate them again but right after surgery it was oddly just want I wanted.

OMG, I watched 2 seasons of Bake-Off as well. Had no desire for food, but was perfect mental speed that first week.

In what world does “inaccurate info “beat the ants off of not having any at all”?! It’s the same darn thing.

It's ***ALWAYS*** better to have SOMETHING rather than NOTHING in regards to trend tracking. If you believe that Zero information is the same as SOME information... well, that's a whole different conversation.

Think of it this way.
If I didn't know the starting measurement for something... anything.
And I kept tracking measurements of that thing daily, even if my instrument wasn't 100% accurate.
And every day I see that there is a decrease in whatever I'm measuring, and that number continues to decrease... that proves that the trend is a decline. Doesn't matter what the actual numbers are, if the **TREND** is showing a decrease, then that's what's happening.
Taking measurements at the same time everyday helps reduce variations in measurement.
Doing the same things before taking the measurements, ensuring that all variables have been reduce to the bare minimum, helps reduce variations in measurement.
Reducing variables to their minimums, reducing variations to their minimums, keeping all constants the same, all these things help to provide the best possible trend data.
So yes, having SOME information, even if it's not 100% accurate, is much more beneficial than not having any information at all.
And to be honest, the variations we are talking about here are negligible for our purposes.

Oh and Oceanlove if you don't have one, and are looking for a scale, drop the extra coin and save yourself some sanity and get a scale that tracks body fat % as well. Trust me, this extra metric has really quelled my frustrations during stalls... seeing the weight not move sucks, knowing body fat % is dropping even though the weight isn't as really saved me from going crazy!

At this point I just have a regular scale. Today is my 5th week post op. I still have only lost 12 pounds. I feel like starving myself. Here I went through the rigors of major surgery to lose only 12 pounds. Oh what fun.

Did anyone find it difficult to sleep in bed? Or would a recliner help for the first couple of weeks?

I ended up sleeping in a chair on and off for two months. It was just weird pains and also reflux like symptoms. I would not buy a recliner though!

For your surgery, something to walk the halls of the hospital in, a charger for your phone and a chapstick. Seriously, that's it. You'll get all the other stuff you need from the hospital and you'll be discharged before you know it anyway. Gas X doesn't help with the kind of gas pains you get from laparoscopic surgery, so I knew I didn't need that. Those dry mouth sprays are nasty to me, so I just drank Water when my mouth felt dry (win/win!). I would never take my own pillow to the hospital (staph/strep/pseudomonas/MRSA/other ick) so I just asked for extras until I was comfortable.

At home, you need to drink water and Protein Drinks, so having a couple of options to choose from is great. You need a reliable scale, I opted to spend the $$ to get one that synchs with my Fitbit, so I have a record of every time I stepped on the darned thing. A couple of water bottles that make you happy are nice to have...I filled a gallon container every day, still do, and made finishing that my goal. You won't be able to do it for the first few weeks, but it was nice to be able to just look at it to know how much I'd had that day.

Things I wish I hadn't wasted money on: a Nutribullet (which I used for a month and haven't touched since) , tons of different Protein powders (I found the ONE and threw the rest out, should have tried them individually or a couple at a time), too many Protein Bars, too many clothes in the early months.

Mostly, you need supportive people and a realistic idea of what the immediate post-op period is going to be like :) Good luck!

Lip balm
Breath spray
A robe (I had a catheter in so I couldn’t wear pants for when your walking the halls no one needed to see my tush)
Ear buds (again for when your walking laps)
Crocs ( again for walking the halls easy on and off and nonslip)

A pillow!!!   Even if you don’t really use it while in the hospital you will definitely need it for the car ride home (I swear my mother hit every pothole and went over every railroad track my city has!)

Def a pillow! I had a 3.5 hour drive, and I think my husband hit every pot hole in IL as well.

Yeah I’m sure I’m going to think exactly the same when my drive home starts. 2 long hours

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
