Anyone dependent on NSAIDs for pain before surgery? What did you do for pain after your surgery? I don't mean right after, but like a few months later? I have arthritis along with back problems and take a prescription NSAID. The thought of having to give it up and live with pain scares me. Tylenol doesn't do much for me.

I had to go off my nsaid a couple of months ago. That contributed to why I finally decided to do surgery. Getting the weight off will help with the pain.

NSAIDs are a HUGE No-No after WLS. Hopefully you've discussed this with your surgical team and primary, there are other options besides just Tylenol for your pain relief needs. But you'll be banned from NSAIDs after WLS. They cause some nasty stomach issues due to the change in stomach size.

I discovered I was allergic to tylenol during my recovery from WLS. I also suffer chronic headaches and Migraines. OOPS. I talked to my doctor about it and he gave the OK on nsaids. I've been taking motrin since about a month post-op. I've taken Aleve on occasion as well. I didn't experience any issues at all. I don't take it every day though, but often several times per week.

Thanks for the replies. My surgeon says No NSAIDS ever again regardless of which type of surgery I have. Guess I'm just wondering what else I can take for pain, but it will probably have to be tylenol.

Slightly controversial question, but... have you thought about CBD's for your arthritis and back pain? There have been quite a few studies done and the results are quite impressive.

Yes, I have definitely thought about that for pain, and will discuss with my PCP after surgery . Thanks for mentioning it!

My mother has Fibro... she was on all the nasty pain meds, dealt with the side effects of them, finally got her off of the addicting pharms and onto the natural stuff, works better and less complications!

Hey Kathy! CBD is the non-psychoactive component from Cannabis. IE it doesn't get you "high". It does have some amazing anti-inflammatory and pain revealing properties. No negative side effects at all and 100% natural. Sadly New York is really against anything to do with Cannabis, so CBD might not be an option for you. Talk to your primary though, they *should* know the details.

I just checked out Connecticut's laws on medical marijuana and it can't be used for general pain, only very limited conditions. Hopefully they'll expand it.

CBD may not fall under medical marijuana laws. It does not contain any THC, which is the psychoactive component.

oh! That's good news. What doctor prescribes it, and where do you obtain it from? Our state has dispensaries for medical marijuana but I don't know about CBD.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
