Since I can’t take my ibuprofen after Friday ever again [emoji20] my drs said Tylenol extra strength. But numerous people in the waiting room and nursing staff said to get the liquid, it works faster and better. Of course I’m sure we will come home from procedure with some good pain meds. Just want to be prepared for Migraines and you know that favorite time of the month!!!

I think you can use Torani sugar free syrups for flavoring, but not fruit at first.

I know how you feel I started my liquid diet on May 1st and it’s been hard. I’m consistently hungry and all I can think about is the food i want to eat. Lol But I’m keeping my head up because being healthy is going to feel better than any food i can indulge in. My surgery date is May 15th. Stay strong you got this!!!

I know how you feel I started my liquid diet on May 1st and it’s been hard. I’m consistently hungry and all I can think about is the food i want to eat. I don't have Costco... I want one...lol. When I first started reading your post I was like, ok... She got Water. Then I'm like what the heck is she using the trash bags and stuff for after surgery...lol. In was waiting for some amazing, life changing idea u came up with using trash bags.... Sorry, it was funny when it happened (either that or I'm delirious and need sleep)

Hi all, I read through this thread last night and realized I was both lucky and horrified.

Lucky, because my center gave me a binder similar to the one discussed. I find it surprising that some of you haven't received a whole lot more information from your docs pre-surgery.

And horrified because I am a super-nerd book girl, and before my first seminar I had read every book about wls I could get my hands on. And every medical journal article on the subject available to me online.

Why are you waiting until surgery to read the books you mention? They have fabulous suggestions for what to bring to the hospital, what to eat, recipes for each stage of recovery, etc. Not to mention dealing with emotions post op. And blow-by-blows of what you're going to feel like after surgery as you heal.

If you own a kindle, Alex Brecher's The Big Book on the Gastric Bypass is only $9.99, as are the other "Big Books" (on Gastric Sleeve and Weight Loss Surgery). "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" is about $11.99. "The Emotional First-Aid Kit" is $9.99. And on and on. You can of course buy the paperback books as well. If you are a Prime member you'll find books you can read for FREE, and if you do Kindle Unlimited (or a month's free trial) you can find more free books than you'll know what to do with. (Sorry, I don't know about Nook or other Apps).

Speaking of FREE, go to Amazon, find what you'd like to read, and then go to your local library and find it. Sometimes a book from the shelf, an interlibrary loan, sometimes borrowing electronically--you can almost always get your hands on what you need. Why wait until post-surgery to read about what it's like, and how to prepare for it?

I think I'll be way too stupid with pain to read anything after surgery, but that's just me. I'm already like that half the time. I'm going to write very clear checklists for myself (and whoever might help me) on what to eat and when to take meds. Then it's just choosing the right level of silly for my TV watching--Steve Martin? The Princess Bride on endless repeat? Monty Python? Miranda Hart? French & Saunders?

I always write too much. Sorry for that. (My family is trying to teach me how to text. Imagine how that's going).

Does your doctor have the internet-based charts? Everywhere I go, I have to sign up for those stupid things. But I have noticed that if I send a doctor or nurse a question using that interface, they always reply. Because it is on your medical record as soon as you ask, and if they don't reply then they look bad. (In the past I've had so many doctors tell me unpleasant news on the phone, only to find out later there's not a word about those conversations in my records--drives me nuts!)

I am the one who mentioned the books you are referring to,I believe. I AM preop. I have already read them. I just suggested them as items to buy when preparing for surgery if you haven't already. I also like to have as much info as I can get my hands on. My doctor, though at what is considered a center of excellence, does not give more than a few hand outs and includes links to various websites with information. As much as I would love a binder with all of HIS actual protocols on each subject, I have managed to educate myself. That being said, I feel the people here, having personally lived it may be able to give suggestions maybe not thought of as necessary. Certain things that may seem trivial to some but have an added comfort or somehow improved their experience in some way.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
