Bullying

Recommended Posts

Why are we so quick to call “bully?” By it’s very definition it’s very difficult to bully on an internet board—

“Bullying is the use of force, threat, or coercion to abuse, intimidate or aggressively dominate others.

The behavior is often repeated and habitual. One essential prerequisite is the perception, by the bully or by others, of an imbalance of social or physical power, which distinguishes bullying from conflict.

Behaviors used to assert such domination can include verbal harassment or threat, physical assault or coercion, and such acts may be directed repeatedly towards particular targets. Rationalizations of such behavior sometimes include differences of social class, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, appearance, behavior, body language, personality, reputation, lineage, strength, size or ability.”

Is it because we are primed to see it because of our history?

That is all.

Because it's another "me too" thing that is going around. You disagree with someone. You dare to voice an opinion or get animated or passionate about a topic or in stating your case that is in opposition to the opinion of the someone else, and everyone who's received a participation trophy for taking part in anything including life, decides to holler, "Bully!" "Bully!"

It's the word of the day.

In my youth, the word of the day was "groovy." And I grew up in a world of suck-it-up-buttercup, life doesn't revolve around you. LOL. So two different worlds.

Sigh.

(Great post by the way.)

Is it because we are primed to see "bullying" because of our history? There is a difference between opposing opinion, trolling and cybercrime. People label bully to many situations.

I can see bullying by your definition happening online -

  • Domestic violence victims being stalked online by their perpetrators.
  • Courtroom witnesses being intimidated by people on there social mediaccounts. Reading threatening post to coerce them to not testify.
  • Children being groomed/preyed on by sexual predators. (https://www.bark.us/blog/grooming-signs-sexual-predators/)

I tend to agree that a lot of labels are flying around too loosely defined and used to sensationalize nearly everything to such an extent that real events involving crimminal activity get ignored or lumped in with a total non-event.

I guess I grew up in the world of suck it up but I honestly hated that world. It turned me into a bitter and morose person. I think the world would be a better place if more of us practiced a little compassion and tried to walk a mile in the other person's shoes. I understand that we're all human and make mistakes but I think a little compassion goes a long way.

I think we just need to accept the fact that these forums have many different personality types, who have many different opinions, and are following the advice of many different doctors, who have vastly different life experiences, who have widely different diplomacy skills, with major differences in culture, age, education and support.

If there was only one way to lose weight successfully, even within the surgical realm, we'd all have done it and we'd all have the same result. But we don't. We all have asked a lot of questions; some are brilliant, some are brain burps. Generally, if someone is taking the time to post a reply to a thread, I believe they are trying to be helpful.

All we can do is try to help each other out, share victories and be supportive during struggles. Hugs to all.

p.s. for you good grammarians out there - I realize that was one hum-dinger of a run-on sentence!

Cyber bullying is another animal completely...

“Cyberbullying or cyberharassment is a form of bullying or harassment using electronic means.

Cyberbullying and Cyberharassment are also known as online bullying. It has become increasingly common, especially among teenagers.

Cyberbullying is when someone, typically teens, bully or harass others on social media sites. Cyberbullying allows bullies to easily and anonymously harass victims online. They do this by flaming, harassing, outing, exclusion, impersonation, and stalking.

Harmful bullying behavior can include posting rumors, threats, sexual remarks, a victims' personal information, or pejorative labels (i.e., hate speech).

Bullying or harassment can be identified by repeated behavior and an intent to harm.”

Still not what I’m seeing here

But bullying is always about difference in power. By definition. That doesn’t exist here on this board.

And it’s almost always about a repeated pattern so when people call in about a single post that’s crying wolf to me.

Just happens all the time on here. Wasn’t a big ol blowup this time, but it’s just silly. People over react.

I get the suck it up generation and I’m not there either but there’s an in between.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
