What are you addicted to...like really, truly, mess with your brain addicted?

Ever since I decided to have WLS I've been trying to answer this question. Because I knew that until I identified the issue I wouldn't be able to fix it. I have a lot of things I feel like I'm addicted to but I kept coming back to sweets. I have observed in my house that when we have sweets around, they call to me but no one else. My kids will have a brownie when I make them and then totally forget about them. However, I'll sneak a bite while I'm doing the dishes, or come down after they're asleep to eat one, or have one for Breakfast before they come down the stairs. So clearly I have a problem.

But it didn't really click until I was watching an episode of My 600lb Life the other night. In the episode this woman was showing all the places in her bedroom where she hid candy and chocolate. And all of a sudden this memory came flooding back to me...

I was in Jr High, so probably 12 at the time. With any money I had from chores I would go to the store on my way home from school and buy kool-aid packets. When my parents weren't home and my brother wasn't around, I would mix one kool-aid packet with a cup of sugar in a ziploc baggie and hide it in my room, on a shelf behind my dolls. I would cut one of the corners off the baggie and just eat the flavored sugar. Like a pixie stick but in a major quantity. I can now remember that at one point I had four flavors in my room...that's four cups of sugar I was eating probably over the course of one week. I don't think my parents ever knew. I didn't see it as anything other than a fun secret because I was super skinny as a kid. It didn't matter what I ate, I never gained weight. But now I can see this is where my problems started, even if it took another 10 years for the weight to start pilling on.

I don't even know yet what to do with this realization but confessing this is definitely a start. So, what have you all been truly addicted to?

Diet Coke - gave it up over 2 years ago. Don't trust myself to even have one at a party.

I am a bleu cheese girl. I love bleu cheese, can't get enough blue cheese! That being said, we can still have cheese but I have changed to reduced fat or fat free. I still feel like I am getting cheese, but I am not going to eat something that is 95% fat anymore. Do I still want it? Heck yeah, but I am doing really well curbing my head craving.

It was soda, diet or regular, and potato chips. I haven't had either one since pre surgery. I don't think I could have one in moderation without slipping back into a deep dark hole.

That's good that you're avoiding these triggers. Diet soda is a slippery slope for me as well. I am just as happy to be free of it.

I think I was truly addicted to an energy drink called power edge. I had to stop before surgery but that was hell. It wasn’t the caffeine either, it was the strangest thing. Oddly enough, my sister feels like she has an addiction to them too. It makes me wonder what they are made of that is causing that. IMG_9867.JPG

Diet Mountain Dew and sweets. I had my share of chocolate cupcakes pre op. Kicked both bad habits before surgery.

I won't say that I will never eat a dessert again but, I will say never again at least until I hit goal and am in maintenance. Only then if I feel that I can control the portion.

Newest Mountain Dew taste "ice". FYI most Mountain Dees contain Brominated Vegetable Oil , it's in there to keep the colors from separating. But an additional FYI, BROMINATED VEGETABLE OIL is also used as a flame retardant. I think it might mean as long as you drink, plenty of Mountain Dew you'll never catch,on fire.
Other things to give up, my homemade oatmeal soft Cookies made with brown cane sugar. And cheesy, potatoes in any form, scalloped au-gratin , boiled with a cheese sauce or my homemade cheesy potato Soup, with onions and celery cooked in it. Pauvre Moi!😖

I truly can’t pin point one thing, but growing up as a child, it was any & everything for me: sweets (ice cream/cake), carbs (bread/potatoes) & soda (the infamous Mountain Dew & root beer)

my weight gain began as a very young child, my family didn’t have a lot, but we always had food. And cheap food was/is the worst food. Our Friday’s/Saturday’s were always for eating out for dinner & looked forward to my happy meal’s.

I don’t blame my parents really because they did what they had to do. I blame myself as a young adult because I could have changed my mindset

I have taken left over combo pizza and peeled everything off the bread and dropped it into a skillet and added 2 scrambled eggs for a very nice breakfast scramble that always ends up being lunch also cause it turns out to dam big every time :). Nice weekend treat for breakfast but only if you can resist not eating the bread :(

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
