I LOVE researching my family tree...my mother's family is easier to find than my dad's, for some odd reason.

I am French / Creek / Jewish / Caucasian / African-American on my mother's side, and African-American / Choctaw / Caucasian / ? on my father's side.

I'd love to pair a visit to my DD in Virginia when she starts school with a genealogical research trip to find more about my father's side of the family. He was born in Richmond, but I don't know much beyond that. It's hard to find the records sometimes...

Complicate the mixed ethnic heritage with the fact that a lot of names / records / places were lost during the bad old days of slavery, plus a lot of my older relatives are now "gone to glory" and you have a very curious puzzle that I'm only too happy to try and unravel! :thumbdown:

I'm a little nervous delving into my family history. I'm not sure why.

I think 1, I won't find anything. From what I understand, we were all just dirt poor farmers that never really kept records. 2, what if they all were crooks? :thumbdown: Not joking, I seem to have a lot of bad blood that runs in my family, so I'm not sure I want to know the family tree.

Haha! It's true, be careful what you dig up. You might not really wish to have known in the long run.

I don't know if I should even say this, and it has nothing to do with what kind of person *I* am.

On my Mom's Mom's side, I am related to the Dalton Gang (who rode with Jesse James).

On my Dad's Dad's side, I am related to a man who was on the lam, changed his entire identity. He was wanted for murder... yep. True. He was never caught though.

dh REALLY wants to do his geneology, because i'm not sure his family would know the truth if it slapped them upside the head. a LOT doesn't make sense to me - so he really would like the G2.....they were overly religious on both sides & deception involved (my opinion). i think it will be a GREAT novel.

my paternal grandfathers sister did all the leg work a few yrs back. on my fathers side, his family migrated to switzerland from sicily and changed their name. dropped the 2 vowels in the beginning & end...and adopted a swiss "type" name. they did so to get jobs in NYC other than bricklayers - which was what the rest of the family ended up doing when they jumped the pond.

mom's family left germany before hitler lost his 'effin mind. they settled in a farming town in SW VA and never practice their jewish faith. being blonde was a plus - they fit in.

can you hear denial???? guess they did what they did - all around the same time. when my great grandfather died & i was cleaning out his brownstone w/my mom, we found his birth certificate - he had gone by the name arthur, but realized he was really antonio.....

My apprehensions about my job seem to be dead on...I've just been told that there is a meeting scheduled tomorrow at 9:30 am with the Director of Human Resources for the part of the college that I work for, and that I am to attend.

It's about the "upcoming changes in my job description" (quote not exact) because we are moving from a paper application to an electronic one. I'm curious and wary, because a change to my job description should probably also have been cleared through our union. I fired off an email to my union person, and they will have someone there at the meeting with me. I'm sure that won't go over well, but at this point, and with all the changes going on around here, plus the history of acrimony between my employer and the unions, I'm not taking any chances.

I don't know what's going to happen, but I know I don't want to walk in there and get blindsided. I half-jokingly asked if I needed to wear my asbestos underwear, and when I got a confused look from my manager (she's from Trinidad and may not understand the phrase) I asked if I was in trouble. She didn't give me a really straight answer, just said that the meeting was to make sure that everyone was clear on expectations.

I'm VERY wary of this...not sure why the short notice, but I'm going in there loaded for bear, so to speak. I'm going to bring a copy of my latest performance review with me, and have a pad and pen for taking copious notes. Any changes that are to be made probably should be made in writing for the protection of all parties.

The fact that we're meeting with the HEAD of human resources and not the lower-level contact person that I always talk to on hr issues makes me very wary.

We'll see what happens...I'm wearing my power suit tomorrow for additional confidence! :thumbdown:

My family started looking into my maternal grandfather's past. They found that he and his brothers changed their last name in the 40s. Apparenlty one or more of them had been involved with an "accidental" murder. Because they were African American and the person that was killed was not, they assumed they would not get a fair trial in the rural south. They changed the last 3 letters of their last name and moved north. They found an extensive number of additional family members. I don't know a lot about my paternal grandparents other than that my grandmother is part Indian. I am not sure which branch. I also know that my maternal grandmother was part Indian. There is no telling what else is in there. Most of my aunts and uncles are VERY fair skinned.

Ebony, I am so sorry that you are going through strife on your job. I can only hope that it turns out to be nothing. I will keep you (in your power suit) in my thoughts tomorrow.

As for the souvenirs, I've had a few things dragged in to me over time - besides the assortment of (mostly) dead mice, birds, rabbits...altho' one dog brought in a fresh baked pie, still in the pan...

it's every day - squirrel heads that they think are a tennis ball; frogs, mice, you name it - love it when they get skunked too.

re the pie - my big lab is know around my small town and has a lot of friends who feed him. he's been know to steal food off peoples picnic tables & last yr stole a smoked turkey right from a family reunion party. needless to say DH and i had to order pizzas for them...

I just heard back from one of our union reps, who will be there for the meeting tomorrow, and sent the HR Director an email to let her know the union person would be there, so SHE isn't blindsided.

Here's hoping my fears are totally unfounded, but in this current business climate (and they just had a round of job cuts and layoffs in my part of the university) it pays to be safe, not sorry.:confused:

We should talk... I think I am from your DH family.. My lordy my family is so twisted and messed up when it comes to religions (I call it cults to them) and the deception is unreal. I don't think anyone in my family could tell the truth even if god himself showed up and asked them the question. I know my grandmother was married 9 times and I don't even know who my real grandfather was. Then both of my parents followed the same trend and now have been married 4 times each. I have multiple siblings that I know are out there but don't really know and none of my parents keep in touch with them.
