I know it’s different for everyone in recovery time.. what is the typical recovery time for someone getting the VSG? Or RNY?

I’m starting a new job and I’m nervous I’ll lose my job later on once I go for surgery.. The employer does know that I have a pending surgery date (just don’t have an exact date yet) and is aware of all the necessary appointments need to be kept. When she asked how long is the recovery time .. I didn’t know what to say 🤷‍♀️

Depends on what your job is like. Two days after my surgery I started working again part-time and remotely, then another week that was closer to full-time and part-remote. I was back at work full time two weeks after surgery. If I were doing it again I'd take at least that first week off entirely, then probably part-time or remote for the second. My job is pretty high-stress and while I sit at desks a lot, those desks are spread across a city and I travel between them a lot. I didn't properly take into account how much that would take out of me.

When guessing how soon to come back, don't just think of the physical demands of your job, also think about the mental demands. You don't have to work in a warehouse to come back from work utterly wiped out.

I was able two weeks. Currently finishing my first full week back at work. It went very well and was actually felt good to be back (I’ll never let my boss know). Only you know your boundaries. But two weeks was a good amount of time to be out for me.

I had surgery 3/12 & I asked to be cleared to work again 3/23. I could of went back much sooner if I had wanted. They just don’t want you doing anything too strenuous.

I’m a CNA and work in a fast pace environment. Frequent bending, lifting and twisting.. It’s a hospital setting so I really won’t be able to sit around much.

Yeah I understand, puts you in a tough situation. Plus they really don’t want you lifting anything over 10-15 pounds. If it helps I’m getting cleared 4/19 to resume lifting and everything else. So about 5 weeks for me. Seems like a long time if you ask me.

I work as a key holder at a retail store, because of the physical demands my job presents, and there not being a light duty or part time option... I’m out until my 1 month follow up. I think I’m an office setting I would have been back way soon... thank god for short term disability pay!!
Ps. If your starting a new job double check your insurance didn’t change to something that required more to get surgery

I had RNY and was back to work 3.5 weeks later (three weeks exactly would've been a Thursday, so I just waited until the following Monday to give myself a few extra days), but I have a desk job.

I got the job offer to start next week for training (she thinks my surgery will be some time soon) even though I told her I still don’t have a set date yet 🤷‍♀️

Do you have an HR person? You can file for FMLA or Family/Medical leave...By law your company cannot fire you during that time and your job position has to remain for you by the time you return. My neighbor had her surgery and she took 4 weeks. You never know how you will feel. Sometime going back to soon is not always the best.

I haven't had my surgery but Im going to ask for 3-4 weeks. I dont want to go back to work and find out a week back in that I need to take more time off cause its im in pain or suffering from nausea, Migraines, soreness, etc...If im 110% ready, strong physically/mentally before 3-4 weeks, ill go back in early....

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
