Clothing During Rapid Weightloss Months

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Did any of you prep by grabbing a few things for the next size down so you had them on hand? I've been thinking of buying a few pairs of pants in the next 3 lower sizes just to have them on hand while I go through the rapid loss. There are not a ton of plus size stores around me, so I always have to order from Lane Bryant online. Did any of you prep a bit with a few outfits?

I ask mainly because I work in a professional setting and worry about looking all schlumpy during post-op... lol! Thoughts and advice?

Sadly, I already have about 4 sizes of clothes in my closet. No need to buy for a while.

Yes, I bought XL t-shirts from Groupon and Woot several months before I needed them. In general, if I’m buying clothes, it’s in the next size down from where I’m at now.

Today I was pleasantly surprised to learn that my suits can be taken in, and for free, since the charge I already paid for tailoring was for the life of the suits.

Same situation here. My work slacks are looking pretty baggy. so I just ordered the next two sizes down. I'm really hesitant to buying more than 1 pair in each size because they are expensive, and I have the expense of having them hemmed as well. I might be ok because I work from home whenever I'm not traveling. So it's not like I need to dress professionally 5 days a week. My tops are still fine, and I have a few that are too tight, so I should be fine with those for a while. The other part of my work wardrobe is more formal skirt suits and dresses. Those are expensive, and dresses aren't the same as slacks, you can't wear the same dress week after week. So for my less casual work wardrobe I plan on using a clothing rental service. I'm going to try out GwynnieBee.com. They have from plus sizes down to regular sizes, and quite a few options that suit my style. I think it is expensive, but cheaper than trying to keep a professional wardrobe while I go down in sizes.

Thankfully/Unfortunately I have a wardrobe that ranges from Medium to XL as my weight bounces around over the years, so no need to buy anything.

I'm doing lots of wrap dresses, flared if possible, which tend to bridge a lot of sizes.

I've bought a few still-in-good-shape items here and there at Goodwill, plus I have some hand-me-downs from relatives and friends and from when I wore slightly smaller sizes. I also plan on hitting up garage sales this spring/summer. Right now, I've got two trash bags full of pants/capris and two of shirts, all ranging in size from 18-30 (I started out as a 34 and right now am in a 28 for jeans -- some of the size 30 items are things that have shrunk or run small).

Thanks everyone! I think they can be pretty expensive, so I don't think I will buy entire outfits. But I am thinking 1 pair of jeans, and 1 pair of simple black work slacks that for the next few sizes. Shirt are easier because I've always worn blouses that are more flowy than fitted and they should last me a few sizes I think. Besides, my weight loss has never historically hit my breast area until the end, so the girls will keep the shirt filled out I think...

However the wrap dress is a great idea! They are not cheap, but they could be a good investment!

I'm going to try out GwynnieBee.com.

Be very careful with GwynnieBee, I’ve heard major major horror stories about their policies and service.

I have lots of things in my closet that I am looking forward to being able to wear again, if only for a short time. This time, when they are too big I am getting rid of them...never to be worn by me again!

If you’re lucky, you will. I have some short sleeve shirts that went from “too small” to “too big” before I could wear them again. “Just right” was in the middle of winter.

I bought only one or two things in anticipation of moving down in size
And I stuck to the same basic things anyways

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
