Today is my first day posting so forgive me if I don’t get the lexicon right the first time.

Surgery Date: March 5, 2018

Starting Weight: 261

Surgery Day Weight: 250

Today’s Weight (Week 1): 241

I had a 90 day program working with a dietician and completing all of the pre-operative testing culminating in a 3 day liquid diet prior to surgery. The first day of the liquid diet was hard, but the excitement of my upcoming surgery made the other two days fairly easy.

I arrived at the hospital last Monday morning at 5:45 am and was wheeled into surgery at 7:45 am. I don’t remember much of that first day but I was up and walking that afternoon and evening. I was sore and there was pain but it was managed with Roxycodone every 3-4 hours (as long as my blood pressure didn’t drop too low - overnight, I had to wait 6 hours between doses as my BP had dropped below 100 systolic.

Day 2 at the hospital was filled with trying to get my fluids in and trying to get the gas out! The pain I was experiencing was mostly related to my abdomen being bloated with gas as a result of the laparoscopic procedure. I was successful on the former (sip, sip, sip!) but woefully unsuccessful on the latter. (In retrospect, I wish I would have walked more that second day.)

I was released by noon on day 3 and recovered the rest of the week at home. Below are just a few things that I’ve learned. Please share some of the things you’ve learned as well wherever you are in your journey and let’s help set expectations and share great ideas!

1. When you begin your Protein Shakes, your bowels will start moving again! I called my Drs office panicked because I pooped! (A bit scary after not pooping for almost a week!)

2. For me, I was unable to lay on my side until Day 6 comfortably. I used a comfy recliner most nights which prevented me from trying to toss and turn from side to side (I’m a side sleeper)

3. sugar free popsicles are great!

4. I don’t know if this will last, but my taste for broth has changed. Pre-surgery - and for my whole life - I have loved beef and chicken broth. But now, I can’t stand it.

5. You will get bored on the all liquid diet post op. Look for things you can combine. On my plan, I was allowed coffee. The Protein shakes I found to be quite chalky in my mouth. On Day 5 I combined the two, using my flavored Protein Shake as a “creamer” to my coffee. It was warm and delicious and now the only way I get in my protein shake.

6. Listen to your pouch. The one thing you don’t want to do is pop the pouch. The staples need at least 3 weeks to fully heal so follow your surgeon/dietician’s program exactly. No cheating! Two tips my surgeon gave me - if you hiccup, you’ve overfilled - and if you want to clear your pouch sooner, stand up very straight for a few minutes to help facilitate drainage through the small intestine.

7. You will get tired easily - so push yourself but don’t overdo it. I started out walking throughout my house the first few days, up and down the stairs, went outside on Saturday and walked up and down the driveway, and finally went out to a few stores with my husband yesterday. I did okay at the grocery store until we went to check out. All of a sudden I was super tired. When we went to Home Depot to pick out a barn door, I found a chair to sit in while my husband picked up a few things before meeting me in the door section. I was ok walking back to the car but was tired the rest of the evening. Take it slow.

Today starts Week 2 and I get to add applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes and oatmeal. It’s nice to have something warm and chewy in my mouth again.

I will continue to post updates and invite all other March surgery dates to join.

Thanks,

Roxine

Hi Roxine thank you for sharing your journey. Glad to hear you are well on your way to recovery & a better & healthier lifestyle.

I had revision bypass on March 9th. The surgery went flawless however my stomach is super swollen due to what I'm hoping is from the gas. It's a bit uncomfortable to say the least. I'm hoping the swollen goes down before I go back to work on the 19th. I fly back home from TijuanaX tomorrow where I will continue to recoup.

I'm still on clear liquid diet for the next 2 weeks. I Just ordered me LonoLife Grass Fed Beef & chicken broth from Amazon. It has 10g of Protein & comes in little packets, this will surely help me get my protein in.

Hi and welcome!

Yes, the swelling is primarily gas and will go down within a week. I made the mistake of weighing myself when I got home and I had gained like 7 pounds from surgery date! But it was all fluids (IV) and GAS!

Walk walk walk as much as you can. Make sure to keep up your fluids. And remember to rest and relax during these next 7 days before returning to work.

I started back today (7 days Post-Op) bit have the luxury of teleworking this week. I plan on returning to the office next Monday.

Thank you Roxine for the words of encouragement. Yes I plan on doing plenty of walking over the course of the next 7 days so that I can get rid of this gas.

As far as weighing myself when i get home tomorrow I want be doing that BC I can tell I will tip the scale due to how swollen I am. I'm going to try my best to wait & weigh myself @ the end of my 2 weeks clear liquid period. Finger crossed😁

Hello everyone, my first day here, been reading, getting to know some of you through your posts, my surgery was 3/2/18, I’ve had minor complications but won’t let that put me down. Life is complicated already, LOL- when I decided to do this my husband wasn’t thrilled, not on board, week before surgery he totally got it and took 2 wks off just to be next to me, I’m so thankful for that! I’ve had a wound infection, leaking, etc

Just wanted to give an update. I've been really busy lately with work and my husband had recent surgery. I was off work last week and taking care of him, amongst a nice visit from my mom.
I'm getting super close to Onderland! I keep teetering around 201-203lbs. Its been this way for the last two weeks.
I went shopping this past weekend for fall/winter clothes. I am officially no longer a plus size woman. I wear dresses every day, so it's crazy to say, but I hadn't bought any pants since I was a size 20. I only replaced my pants once from a 26ish to a 20 and then I just bought size 12/14 jeans this weekend  And I'm wearing a large in tops (previously a 4X) . It was such a surreal experience going in and being able to shop in this HUGE section of the store. Although, I'm learning, no matter what your size, clothes are still hard to shop for. I thought size would open all these wondrous opportunities, not so much LOL.
Basically, I'm keeping busy and keeping my mind healthy. A part of that is I'm not hyper focused on the scale. I get more comfort from the NSV anyways.
I hope to be online more this week

I've noticed your absence, and you've been missed. You were here for me when I first joined this forum, so I'm a bit attached to you as well as grateful for your kind support early on.

I enjoyed hearing about your shopping experiences. I can relate to the plus-size woes. I'm not anywhere near being out of 3x-4x, but I'm living vicariously through you and your size 12/14 shopping for now! I wear dresses exclusively because I've always enjoyed their comfort, variety of style, and the way they make me feel (like a woman!). I can't remember the last time I wore pants of any kind. It might be nice to wear jeans again someday.:)

@KimTriesRNY Its such a good feeling, congrats to you as well!

@Missouri-Lee's Summit I know, I've been so occupied lately, I like to be active on here, but sometimes time just gets away from me. I very much appreciate your kind words! Dresses are the best :) I will probably still wear a lot of them with tights, going into the winter. But it feels awesome to look good in jeans again. You will be there before you know it! I hit the 3 month mark and my body started changing at a rapid rate. I had lost a lot of weight in the first 3 months, but my body didn't seem to reflect it until then.

I'm glad everything is going well on your end. Family first, always and of course, but we do miss your presence here. Congrats on your clothes shopping! I recommend to not go overboard, since you are still losing and will probably be much smaller by the time it gets really cold.

        Way to go!

      4. AshAsh1

@macadamia thank you :) I am being careful not to buy too much, but my weight loss has slowed substantially. I'm not losing 10lbs-15lbs a month like I previously was. I'm lucky to get off 5lbs a month now. Not to say that I wouldn't lose a size after a couple months, but it's not as rapid. Plus I buy all my clothes from Marshalls and TJMaxx (who's return policy is practically forever), so if they don't fit when it gets time to wear them... then I'll return them for store credit to buy new stuff.

        Always thinking ahead - awesome!

Stall is finally broken and I am losing again. Stalls suck but I understand them much better now. I am still feeling great and have kicked my workouts up a notch. I went to an arm/abs class that turned out to be all men and "me".  The dudes walked in with their 30 lb hand weights and I have my little 7.5/10 lbs and I was thinking to myself...what did I get myself into, and am I going to embarrass myself?  Well I decided to stick it out and although I couldn't do everything the dudes were doing, I did a pretty darn good job of keeping up and I am proud of myself for being able to stick with it. I decided I am going back again tomorrow and I am going to kill it again. I belong there too!

Good for you! I'm still on 3lb weights :( But, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. I'm glad you're feeling so well and able to work out so much! I'm sure that's really taking the inches off!

The whole time I kept having a nightmare I wouldn't lose weight after all this. How horrifying to have it come true. I had surgery on the 8th. I haven't lost anything since. i drink my water, my protein shakes, I walk, but nothing. How could this be happening. Am I just doomed to be overweight forever? I am beyond devastated. Maybe something changes in the next couple months, but I am no longer hopeful.

Calm down. You're still very swollen. Many doctors advise against weighing the first month because it can be very disheartening. Everyone heals at different rates. Just keep with your plan and you'll be ok. I promise, the scale will move soon - and BIG! It can take a full month for all the abdominal swelling to go down.
